About us
Located on over 400 acres in beautiful West Marin County just north of San Francisco, Spirit Rock offers a refuge from everyday life where it's truly possible to quiet the mind, soften the heart and see life in a new way. The caring teachers, staff, and volunteers, create a supportive environment for turning inward and letting go of the struggles that get in the way of experiencing the freedom and joy that are inherent in every moment of life. Spirit Rock’s mission is to provide practitioners with teachings to manifest wisdom and compassion in all aspects of their lives, for the benefit of all beings. The vision of spiritual practice includes preserving the depth of traditional wisdom and teachings, while also developing an integrated and openhearted life of engagement in the world. The nonprofit organization was founded to create an enduring dharma retreat, practice, community, and study center rooted in the Buddhist tradition. It offers a range of residential meditation retreats, non-residential programs and dharma training programs for new and experienced students from diverse backgrounds. The teachings of the Buddha (Dharma) and the practices of Insight Meditation (vipassanā) and lovingkindness meditation (mettā) are at the heart of all the programs. A Spirit Rock staff position is a wonderful opportunity to explore work as practice in a kind and considerate environment. In conjunction with the organization’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative, Spirit Rock honors and celebrates different ideas, voices, perspectives, and backgrounds that help create a robust and innovative multicultural organization. Spirit Rock strives to create a workplace culture that reflects the communities it serves and empowers everyone to bring their full and authentic selves to its teams. All employees have the responsibility to treat fellow employees with the utmost respect and dignity, at all times.

"Being in the world is messy. It’s a kind of deep practice to be in the throes of life, to be in the middle of chaos. When we learn how to be flexible and malleable with our real lack of control, we’re faced with uncertainty and impermanence. And we learn to live with that in a major way."--Cara Lai Listen to Cara's talk, "Practice for Average People": https://lnkd.in/gXeJD8JK You can join Cara, Matthew Brensilver, Vinny Ferraro & Hakim Davy Tafari for the "Young Adult Insight Meditation Retreat," Aug. 5-10 at Spirit Rock. "To be an open-hearted human means that we have to come to terms with the fact that there will be some pleasure, there will be some pain, and that we don’t have much control over that. And so equanimity grows over time, with perspective." --Tempel Smith Listen to Tempel's talk on lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy & equanimity here: https://lnkd.in/ga_7ecMx Join Tempel, Tuere Sala, Anushka Fernandopulle, Bonnie Duran, John Martin, Kristina Baré & Rasika Link for our "Summer Lovingkindness Retreat" (August 18 - 27). "It’s not easy to get clear about who we really are amid the noise of modern life. With the algorithms giving us so much reinforcement that our current thinking is right, it’s not easy to be open to changing our ideas or behavior. In a world where our reality seems to change on an hourly basis, it’s not easy to persevere. So developing some sort of mindfulness practice to access this level of reflection is actually step zero of living purposefully." https://lnkd.in/giJZhZAG #mindfulness #mindfulleadership #mindfulleader

Earth, water, fire, air, space: A fundamental aspect of establishing embodied mindfulness centers around contemplations of the elements. During “The Elements: Cultivating an Embodied Experience of Emptiness and Fullness” (on-land Aug. 11-18) with Tuere Sala, Dana DePalma, MA, MFT, Alex Haley and Stephanie Antoine, we will practice with the descriptive nature of each of the elements, which can be known through the felt sense, energetic sense, and intuitive knowing. We will contemplate the relationship they have with each other and their importance in establishing mindfulness and concentration, while allowing them to support the kind of non-conceptual knowing from which insights naturally arise: https://lnkd.in/g54a6eKS Learn more--Listen to Tuere's talk on compassion here: https://lnkd.in/ghe-KFF9 #mindfulness #meditation #meditationretreat #spiritualjourney #spiritrock #spiritrockmeditationcenter

"There are two sides to self-compassion, says Kristin Neff, PhD. The tender side embodies the idea that although you are innately flawed, you are still worthy. And the fierce side says if you truly care about yourself, you accept yourself but don’t accept all of your behaviors, especially harmful ones." https://lnkd.in/gd6Gaf5d #mindfulness #lovingkindness #compassion

"Being a good leader requires many characteristics of mind and heart, like the ability to be present, clear, and focused. The kind of practice we do, Insight Meditation, cultivates mindfulness, awareness, collectedness of mind, and balance of mind—all of which help you to know what’s happening in the moment and to come up with creative and appropriate responses. Insight Meditation also cultivates positive qualities of heart that can help you to connect better with people with a sense of goodwill and kindness."--Anushka Fernandopulle Reach Anushka's article, "The Path of Leadership," here: https://lnkd.in/gc7m98iv Join Anushka, John Martin, Eugene Cash, Howard Cohn & Victoria Cary at Spirit Rock for "The Spirit of Insight, Dharma & Awakening" (July 29 - August 4).
