Special Olympics mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. In Maine we serve over 5000 athletes and offer 70+ events at the local, state, national and international levels. With only 7 full time paid staff in the state, we are always looking for volunteers, sponsors, donors, coaches and of course new athletes.

🏀Meet our Honorary Unified Basketball Coaches for Special Olympics Maine Game Day at the Maine Celtics on Sunday, December 10th @1:00pm. Coach Charlie Bingham and Coach Becky Roak come to us from Morse High School which received national recognition as a Special Olympics’ Class of 2020 National Banner Unified Champion School. Unified Champion Schools are identified based on an inclusive school climate that emphasizes collaboration, engagement, and respect for all members of the student body and staff. National Banner schools are further recognized for demonstrating commitment to 10 national standards of excellence, standards which were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community. The honor is a reflection on the work of Coach Bingham and Coach Roak, both who are physical education teachers and coaches. The dynamic duo have done amazing work on inclusivity. They’ve made presentations to the student body, organized several unified sports teams, and engaged youth leaders who now champion the program. He's a rockstar in bowling, basketball, soccer, swimming, alpine skiing, tennis, speed skating, and bocce. WOW! "I love competing and always trying to do better. I try to beat my score or time. Special Olympics motivates me. I have been given great opportunities through Special Olympics,- I was an athlete on the board of Directors, bowler at the national level, a helper/coach for coaches training for bowling. My favorite memory was when my Grandfather (who was sick), hung my medal around my neck at our State Summer Games for my 400m. Before joining Special Olympics Maine, Olivia didn't have the confidence, the courage or bravery to play sports because of her fears of being "different."
