The Southern Regional Education Board works with states to improve education at every level, from pre-K through Ph.D. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Atlanta, SREB was created in 1948 by Southern governors and legislatures to advance education and improve the social and economic life of the region. Member states are Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

Alabama has won three top #SREB leadership awards at the 2024 Making Schools Work Conference in Nashville. The Sylacauga City Schools won the 2024 District Leadership Award and Carver High and Austin Middle won Gene Bottoms Pacesetter awards. All three school systems implement Making Schools Work, SREB’s school improvement design that employs a distributed leadership approach to identify problems of practice that impact student achievement and then develop plans to solve them.
