Kari Star is a Speech-Language Pathologist here at Southcoast Health Ear, Nose and Throat. She is known for going above and beyond for her patients. Kari loves her job and strives to make sure they feel confident and empowered to reach their therapy goals. Recently, Michelle D’Auteuil showed her gratitude for the care she received and nominated Kari to become a Southcoast Star through Southcoast Health’s Grateful Patient program. Together, Michelle and Kari’s teammates presented her with the award and a special pin to celebrate. “Kari has helped me in so many ways. She has gone above and beyond, even helping me outside of my appointments and giving me more resources to continue working to find my voice,” says Michelle. “I’m so grateful for her. She’s shown me so much compassion and care, and I’ve made so much progress working with her.” We all thank Michelle for her Grateful Patient donation in honor of Kari’s amazing work. In 2022, Bernadette (Bernie) Mateus learned that the breast cancer that was successfully treated nine years earlier had not only returned, but it had also spread to her liver, lungs, adrenal gland and brain. Bernie sought treatment at our Southcoast Cancer Center in Fairhaven, where she has worked for 35 years in the billing department. Under the care of Dr. Patrick Gagnon, Southcoast’s Chief of Radiation Oncology, she began receiving stereotactic radiosurgery, known as SRS, which focuses multiple radiation beams directly on tumors, avoiding normal tissue. SRS allows many to continue to have a higher quality of life during treatment. “I know I’m getting the best possible care at Southcoast Health,” she said. This is her story: https://lnkd.in/eV3X2M-M

The Nicole Podkowa 5K Run/Walk, now in its seventh year, is gearing up to be the largest and most meaningful yet. We are looking for runners, walkers, and supporters near and far to help us break our previous participation and fundraising records. The story of Nicole Podkowa and the legacy of this race is held close in the hearts of those patients and families that have been helped by the funds raised from this event. But none more so than Dr. John Podkowa, Southcoast Health Primary Care physician, and his family. “I just remember thinking, ‘That’s a home run. Yes, let’s do that. My wife would love that.’ One of the things she used to say after running was ‘Everything just seems more possible after I run.’” Proceeds from the race go to support the Nicole Podkowa Cancer Patient and Caregiver’s Assistance Fund. This unique fund supports patients being treated at the Southcoast Health Cancer Centers, as well as their families who are in need of financial assistance to help with bills, food, housing, transportation, cancer-related supplies, and other necessities. Participating can make a difference in the life of a patient or caregiver in need of support during cancer treatment. Congratulations to Southcoast’s SK3 Unit at Tobey Hospital for their Inpatient Service Excellence Award! Based on patient feedback, the Service Excellence Award is a recognition of a team or department from across our system that has created an exceptional experience by embodying our service behaviors. “As Aristotle once said, ‘Excellence is never an accident.’ The excellence achieved by the team on SK3 is the result of hard work and a sincere commitment to do their best for our patients and for one another,” says Kelly Carneiro, Manager of Patient Care SK3, ICU. Have a positive experience you’d like to share or Southcoast Health staff you’d like to shout out? Tell us in your post-care NRC Health Survey or email us at patientexperience@southcoast.org.

Earlier this month, our Southcoast Health Ambassadors joined the Wareham Garden Club and the loved ones of Jerry Moles and Bill Peckson, for the dedication of a beautiful wind art piece at the Tobey Hospital Healing Garden. Bill was an active member in the Southcoast Health Ambassador program for Tobey Hospital, previously known as the Tobey Guild. Jerry was also a dedicated volunteer in the Southcoast Health community, who took the time each holiday season to decorate the hospital with wreaths and poinsettias, creating a welcoming and festive environment for our patients. The gifted piece of wind art, shaped like a tulip, is very similar to one Jerry had in his own backyard. The donation was made by Jerry and Bill’s families and friends, and they found that there would be no better place to put it than in the Healing Garden at the hospital. The garden, tended by members of the Wareham Garden Club and supported by the Southcoast Health Ambassadors, is located right outside the main entrance of Tobey Hospital and is a calming space for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for this donation that will serve as sign of Bill and Jerry’s compassionate work and their dedication to Tobey Hospital. This month, Southcoast Health’s Charlton Memorial Hospital earned the prestigious two-year designation as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence from the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). This national program recognizes medical institutions across the country that have created stewardship programs led by infectious disease physicians and pharmacists to achieve the highest standards aligned with the evidence-based guidelines for antimicrobial medication use. Antimicrobial medication (antibiotics) are drugs that kill certain kinds of germs and bacteria and stop their growth. When antibiotics are used incorrectly, they can cause side effects and contribute to antimicrobial resistance. This is when germs can defeat the drugs designed to kill them allowing for the germs to continue to grow. This designation recognizes our integration of best practices to slow down the creation of a resistance to an antibiotic, the optimization of the treatment of infections, the reducing of medication side effects associated with antibiotic use and addressing other challenging areas related to the usage of antibiotics. Only 177 hospitals across the country have received this designation since the program’s launch in 2017. This is the second time that Charlton Memorial has achieved this designation, earning it for the first time in 2019. We are ALL in for inclusion here at Southcoast Health, and today we honor and celebrate Disability Pride Month and National Disability Independence Day! On July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, a crucial step toward ensuring equal rights and opportunities for those with disabilities. We are proud to partner with several organizations to help break down barriers and bring a diverse set of skills and perspectives to Southcoast Health. Together, we can continue to create a world where every individual can flourish. You can learn more about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives at Southcoast Health at https://lnkd.in/g5kT_eQ.
