BLOGPOST 5: Gateway to the West & The American Orthopaedic Association !!! Our midwest travelling fellowship continued onto a hot St. Louis, attending the The American Orthopaedic Association 2024 Annual Leadership Meeting. Highlights of the meeting included symposia on residency programs, selection criteria and unionization, presenting us with insight into how the US training system operates and how the problems faced back home in regards to selection and teaching are mirrored here. We also learnt a great deal about leadership and talent development within the orthopaedic community hearing from Dr Kristy Weber, Lilly Marks and Mary Lauria and the dynamic nature of the workforce. However, the standout presentation was delivered by Dr Rex Marco, with an honest, heartfelt and reflective piece about his journey from being a prominent and busy spine surgeon to suffering a tragic accident causing tetraplegia. He taught us that with the power of resilience, mindfulness and adapting strategies, one can overcome any obstacle. We learnt to embrace the highs with gratitude and navigate the lows with strength, reminding us that growth often emerges from adversity. There was not a single dry eye in the room. On the social side of things, we enjoyed the hospitality of the The American Orthopaedic Association at the opening ceremony and subsequent President’s welcome reception, where we were introduced to the membership and were given the privilege to mingle with some of the biggest names, yet humblest surgeons, within the global orthopaedic community. Ciara Stevenson met with her inspirational mentors Laurie Hiemstra and Dr Mary Mulcahey from The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). We also enjoyed a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, learning about their history, beer making techniques and being allowed to interact with their famous Clydesdale horses. Further academic discussion was continued into the evening with Tessa Balach, before her symposium about selection and training of Residents. Also, a big thanks to Dr Anna Miller for hosting us for afternoon nibbles at her residence, introducing us to fried ravioli, a favourite snack of St. Louis. Meeting with more new friends: James Ficke, Cynthia Emory MD, MBA Lauren Tatman. We ended the trip with a meet and greet session hosted by Dr Hassan Mir, MD, MBA Mir, having the chance to mingle with the Alumni of the AOA’s Travelling Fellowships (Drs Ranjan Gupta, MD Stuart Weinstein, Vincent Pelligrini, Steve Frick). And just before we had to checkout from this lovely city, we got the chance to pick the brains of Dr Robert Brophy over breakfast. Being the Lead of the ABC Subcommittee he filled us in on all the hard work that occurs in the background. Next stop - Dr Michael J Lee and University of Chicago!
