As part of Mandel Group, Inc. extensive adaptive reuse and expansion of a 19th-century nunnery and school into Caroline Heights Apartments, a 237-unit multi-family community, the development team faced a significant challenge. They aimed to transform the former chapel and heritage room into a stunning two-story clubroom and entertainment space but needed a solution that would allow them to introduce ample daylight into the space without compromising the historic architecture. Solatube Distributor, Brighter Concepts Ltd., delivered the perfect solution by installing four of our 160 DS Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs). These systems, typically used for residential projects, were not only small enough to fit between the building's trusses, maintaining its structural integrity but also provided abundant daylight, enhancing the space's aesthetic appeal. Now, residents and local businesses can enjoy beautifully lit common spaces for decades to come, fostering a sense of community and well-being. https://buff.ly/3Rr9VMB #SolatubeInternational #TubularDaylighting #ArchitectureDesign #BetterBuildingsforaBetterWorld #AdaptiveReuse #Renovation #MultFamilyHousing #Apartments Project Details: Product: (4) 160 DS Tubular Skylights Architect: Engberg Anderson Architects Solatube Distributor/Installer: Brighter Concepts, Ltd Developer/General Contractor: Mandel Group Location: Elm Grove, WI

Designed by SPF:architects (SPF:a), the redevelopment of the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex in Los Angeles was not just about expansion—it was about redefining sustainability in sports infrastructure. Spanning more than 40,000 square feet, the project included essential features such as a 23,000-square-foot pool facility, a 16,000-square-foot basketball gymnasium, a raised walking track, and more—all seamlessly integrated into existing structures without disrupting current operations. The solution was to employ Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings (PEMBs) and combine them with custom elements to create a unique but cost-effective complex. The Obama Sports Complex wasn't just about aesthetics or necessity, but it also met stringent sustainability objectives. The project’s basketball wing is one of the first Net Zero Energy (NZE) buildings built by the city of Los Angeles.* Central to this achievement are Solatube Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs), which flood the basketball and swimming facilities with natural daylight, reducing reliance on electric lighting and curbing energy consumption. This approach not only earned LEED Silver certification but also ensures a well-lit and energy efficient environment for the community. National Daylight Appreciation Day calls attention to the beauty and versatility of daylighting as a design feature, so for our last feature in today’s series, we are doing just that. Just like stone, wood or glass, natural daylight can be integrated into a space to define, enhance and inspire. Solatube Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs) offer a unique opportunity to incorporate daylighting into your design, whether drawing attention to tubes, shades, shapes or colors. From light wells to luminous walls and "port holes" to perimeter wall washing techniques, there are countless ways to infuse excitement and beauty into any space with daylighting creatively. https://buff.ly/3Rr9VMB #NationalDaylightAppreciationDay #SolatubeInternational #Sunlight #Daylighting #DesignWithDaylight #IlluminateYourSpace

The functional benefits of daylighting go far beyond aesthetics! Did you know that Solatube Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs) nearly eliminate infrared wavelengths from 950-2500nm, allowing the system to deliver a full spectrum of visible light without bringing in the heat? This makes them indispensable in spaces where accurate color representation is crucial, such as manufacturing facilities for quality control or retail environments to showcase products in their most authentic light. https://buff.ly/3Rr9VMB #NationalDaylightAppreciationDay #SolatubeInternational #Sunlight #Daylighting #IlluminateYourSpace #FunctionalDaylighting

Just like for human-centric design, the strategic use of daylight also addresses critical present-day design requirements for achieving high energy efficiency and can be a significant design measure that reduces a building’s lifelong operational carbon footprint. Furthermore, daylighting systems like Solatube TDDs also allow for adaptability and reconfiguration over time, minimizing the need for costly remodels and promoting adaptive reuse. https://buff.ly/3Rr9VMB #NationalDaylightAppreciationDay #SolatubeInternational #Sunlight #Daylighting #IlluminateYourSpace #SustainableDesign

As part of National Daylight Appreciation Day, every hour from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., we are going to help you rethink how daylight can be used in commercial projects and show you how the day is the ideal source of meaningful illumination. Up first, human-centric design. Today, in the modern architectural landscape, it is an understood fact that daylight is well suited to serve as a primary source of daytime interior illumination, providing perfect color rendition and meaningful variation of spectral content and intensity that nurtures building occupants and uplifts the human spirit. Daylight plays a crucial role in regulating our body’s circadian rhythms and boosting the production of serotonin, the "happy chemical" in our brains. This translates to increased energy, improved mood and better sleep while also reducing stress, anxiety and depression. And it's not just adults in work environments who benefit! Children in schools and other learning environments thrive in spaces filled with natural daylight. Did you know a study by Heschong* revealed a 20% boost in math and a 26% spike in reading progress among students in naturally lit classrooms? Rethink the glass box with us. Make sure to follow our page to learn how else daylight can be used to improve your next commercial project. https://buff.ly/3Rr9VMB #NationalDaylightAppreciationDay #SolatubeInternational #Sunlight #Daylighting #IlluminateYourSpace #HumanCentricDesign *https://buff.ly/3OroIZ4
