Racial disparities in healthcare are an unfortunate reality, but this study, published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology, takes a first look at the effect of ethnicity on dopamine transporter binding capacity. With two parents who were doctors, Dr. Krishna Patel practically grew up in the field of medicine. After medical school, she became interested in cardiology as a specialty, particularly cardiac imaging using PET. Dr. Patel regularly works with patients to monitor symptoms and diagnose various heart diseases. Prior to the 2024 Annual Meeting, the SNMMI Pediatric Imaging Council held its 3rd annual Imaging Case Competition. Congratulations to the top 5 cases, which were showcased at the meeting in Toronto, Canada from June 8-11. There's a new proposed rule that unbundles diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals from the current packaged payment system that classifies them as "supplies." The new rule will prevent CMS from overpaying for low-cost diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and give patients access to a more precise generation of imaging agents. Renaissance: a revival of or renewed interest in something. This month's Uptake explores the rising interest in diagnosing cardiac amyloidosis. Once thought to be rare, this cardiac condition is driving the demand for Tc-99m pyrophosphate (PYP) scans. With its increased sensitivity and specificity, this nuclear medicine scan can diagnose cardiac amyloidosis noninvasively and with less risk, and the rise in accurate diagnosis has also spurred treatment innovations. Alzheimer's is one of the most complex medical conditions. In the past, an official diagnosis could only be made after a patient's death. But now, breakthroughs in molecular imaging allow doctors to visualize the disease in living patients--and these same images may lead to treatment in the future. Dmitry Beyder has been a leader in the SNMMI Technologist section. When not caring for patients, he's passionate about growing the workforce pipeline and connecting both college students and high schoolers with careers in nuclear medicine.
