It's great to see this review of the Julia Hotz's new book on social prescribing in the high-profile Harvard Public Health magazine. The review doesn't shy away from the challenges we face in the U.S. to make social prescribing a more accepted medical intervention, but we know we are up to the challenge. Please place your thoughts and comments below on this important review:
Is social prescribing just what the doctor ordered?

A great article here from Reasons to be Cheerful on museum prescriptions! While the article primarily focuses on France, it mentions the growing worldwide social prescribing efforts, including your friends here at Social Prescribing USA. We agree that more research needs to be done to measure the effectiveness of social prescriptions, and we are glad to be part of the answer here in the U.S. Enjoy the article:

The great Harvard University scholar and civic engagment pioneer, Robert Putnam, has always been one of our guiding lights. This morning, The New York Times has a new interview with Putnam on a range of topics, including his new documentary, Join or Die Film, which focuses on the importance of social connection/social participation and personal and community health. Among the many reasons we like the film is that it ends with a call for social prescribing to be part of the solution to America's epidemic of disconnection and loneliness. We encourage everyone to find a way to watch it.

Our organization is sorry to read about the passing of Dr. Ruth Westheimer. In her final role of her legendary life, "Dr. Ruth" was named New York State's first Honrorary Ambassador for Loneliness last Fall. Her appointment last Fall by Gov. Hochul was an important recognition of the importance of social connection to health of citizens in her state (and everywhere). Read more about her appointment, below. RIP, Dr Ruth!

Did you see the YouGov poll last week that showed strong U.S. support for social prescribing to be part of the U.S. health care system? We have now added a link to the poll on our website. See this important information below. It is important that all of us who care about this movement to think about ways to use this important data to promote the field!

We are so pleased to see our friends at Art Pharmacy continue to show leadership in the U.S. in social prescribing. Its new statewide arts prescription effort in Massachusetts---announced this past week---is a landmark effort for the field in the U.S., and shows what type of innovative models of health care can happen with social prescribing. We continue to be excited by the rapid growth of the field! This is just the beginning!
Art Pharmacy has launched in Massachusetts with the first statewide arts prescription program in the US. Further, as a company focused on improving the health and well-being of our members, we are pleased to share that Mass General Brigham has joined this effort specifically to support stress management and its impact on hypertension. Mass General Brigham President and CEO, Anne Klibanski, MD, explained, “We will focus this care at the primary care sites where patients are at most risk, given the long-standing disparities in blood pressure control for underserved communities. This initiative will work in parallel with our clinical equity efforts and our commitment to a personalized, quality experience for every patient at Mass General Brigham.” “We know that the arts have healing powers – both for physical and mental health," noted Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. "Massachusetts is proud to yet again be pioneering a transformative medical innovation with the nation's first statewide arts prescription solution.” Art has long been recognized for its impact on physical and mental health. With the launch of Art Pharmacy’s program in Massachusetts, the arts become a recognized healthcare solution. Art Pharmacy is grateful to have partnered with Mass Cultural Council to lay the groundwork for this statewide rollout over the past few years.
