Let the good times roll, Destination Skatepark is open for action! The Bay of Plenty's newest and largest skatepark was officially blessed this morning at an opening attended by Tauranga City Council Commissioners, the local skate community, local hapū Ngāi Tūkairangi and Ngāti Kuku, project partners, funders, and other guests. A huge thanks to our generous funders TECT, New Zealand Community Trust , Grassroots Trust Limited , The Lion Foundation , Project Tauranga, and New Zealand Lottery Grants Board, who understood the vision and have done all they can to make this skatepark a reality. There are so many reasons why skateboarding doesn’t fit the typical sports model. Some would say it’s not a sport but an art form, a culture, or part of their identity. Others herald its therapeutic qualities and say that going skateboarding regularly is necessary to sustain balance and well-being in their lives. Skateboarding is all these things and so much more. We have a lot to learn about skateboarding and the people who do it because: • People who skateboard have diverse backgrounds, perspectives and needs. • Skateboarding is constantly changing. • There are many barriers to skateboarding in Aotearoa. • We need to shape a future that provides for the needs of the skateboard community. Last year, we approached Sport New Zealand about partnering on a project to learn more about skateboarding in Aotearoa. As a result, our first Skateboard Participation Survey was born. The pages shared in this post contain a few highlights from the survey. The interactive dashboard and report we produced are full of insights and data. Explore it today: https://lnkd.in/gVUTjgDV Many thanks to the project team for making it happen: • David Read for creating the survey, shaping insights, and writing the report. • Sonia G. for guiding the project. • Mark Devery for developing the interactive dashboard. • Alexi Trenouth and the Insights team at Sport New Zealand, thank you for your guidance and expertise and for giving us the opportunity to realise this project.

  • As the governing body of skateboarding in Aotearoa, the voices and needs of our community must inform our work. Our 2023 Skateboard Participation Survey and the Report and Dashboard we released today are both significant projects that guide us on that mission. They’re also the first substantial piece of research done on skateboarding in New Zealand. We have created a series of interactive dashboards so you can modify the view of the data to suit your research needs or line of enquiry. There’s also an in-depth analysis of the survey data, complete with breakdowns of each question. Jump in and take a look. The survey and findings were designed, developed, and presented in partnership with Skateboarding New Zealand and Sport New Zealand. The data has already informed another great project also released today — Sport New Zealand’s Skate Guidelines for Local Government.
