Allan, thank you for flagging. A differently abled person who finds meaningful work should not be asked to accept anything less than a competitive wage. And to think that such a person may be further penalized by Social Security for the fruits of their labor.
Tonight was the third public listening session of the Department of Labor’s comprehensive review of section 14c and payment of subminimum wages to workers with disabilities. These calls have been hard to participate in, as I and many other disability advocates, have had to listen to person after person say deeply dehumanizing and hurtful things about disabled people. Things like “They don’t care how much they make, they just want something to do.” Tonight’s was easier to listen to knowing that the American Association of People with Disabilities had a mobile billboard circling the Department of Labor and the US Capitol for most of the workday and throughout the listening session that told everyone where AAPD stands on this issue. Paying subminimum wages to disabled workers is an outdated and discriminatory practice that needs to end. If you did not get a chance to speak at the listening sessions, you sign our petition at www.endsubminimumwage.org and tell the Department of Labor disabled people’s work is not worth less.
