We've all seen the video of the sea turtle with a straw in its nose? It started a movement to end plastic waste and straw bans. But what made this video elicit such global action? Was it purely the tug on our heart strings or was it that it brought awareness to the plastic pollution in our oceans? It's important to remember the sustainability success stories and learn from them so we can recreate their impacts. https://hubs.li/Q02GD8cg0

Only YOU can ... Smokey Bear turned 80 this year and his message of fire safety remains the same. But wildfires are not inherently bad. In fact, they benefit many ecosystems. However, with climate change leading to hotter, drier seasons and record breaking wildfires, it's hard to picture their benefits when you see article after article of their destruction. Today, Smokey's message shouldn't stand for total fire prevention but as a reminder of our ability to impact our environments through our choices. If Smokey is open to suggestions, perhaps "Only YOU Can Control Forest Fires" might work better. Give us your thoughts. https://hubs.li/Q02GD8bl0

To start “cooking with gas” for our environment, we’re going to have to move away from that idea entirely. We’re going to have to overcome our emotional attachments to fossil fuels. https://hubs.li/Q02FX14H0
Electrification has an emotional problem

Let's make an important distinction in how we communicate human impact on the planet this #worldpopulationday: We don't have an overpopulation problem. We have an over consumption problem. The way we talk about sustainability in developed countries shouldn't scare or shame people into not having children. It should inspire the changes in resource consumption required to support 10B people by the end of the century.

Can you claim you're contributing to the circular economy if you're recycling plastics into your products? Technically it's not greenwashing: the FTC Green Guides don't mention circularity. But you're misleading consumers if you don't have an end-of-life solution that eliminates waste. To be circular, your plastic products need to be both recycled and recyclable (to the same level of quality).

Back in April, an intergovernmental panel met at INC-4 to discuss how to reduce global plastic pollution. They’re looking at the full life cycle, from design and recyclability and considering financial options like plastic pollution taxes or waste collection credits. It’s clear that plastic is a growing concern globally, and this has implications for business. So, to celebrate Plastic Free July, we’d love to hear from you! Do you know of a company doing great things to contribute to solutions? Please share below! #PlasticFreeJuly #INC4 #PlasticPollution #Plastic #PlasticWaste https://hubs.li/Q02F5CMg0

Having a corporate Independence Day celebration? Be sure you walk the talk! It’s a great opportunity to bring in sustainability values and even start new habits on site. Here are a couple tips: -Avoid single-use plastic where possible -Set up clearly demarcated recycling bins -Have a plan for excess food after the party is over, such as donating to a food pantry, or having employees bring in their own Tupperware to take home leftovers. Bonus points? Share how you made your corporate celebrations more sustainable on social media.
