Our board chair Stan McChrystal spoke about the value of national service and its ability to bridge America's divides on CBS Sunday Morning today: "Young Americans come together for a year or two and work together in efforts as varied as health care, education, conservation, the military or other community projects. ...They work alongside other young Americans, serving fellow citizens and learning about each other and themselves. So how could this work? First it exists today in the many programs like AmeriCorps, City Year, and AmeriCorps VISTA but needs to be expanded. A public-private partnership providing a central funding for stipends and other needs, creating programs and opportunities, and establishing a set of supporting policies like educational grants and job placements for national service veterans is needed. It costs money and it takes effort, but the benefits of producing better citizens who are more connected to each other is worth any amount and the time to get serious is now." We are proud to be working to expand and enhance existing #nationalservice programs to bring this inspiring vision to life and make national service part of growing up in America. https://lnkd.in/eYSe9xHC

If enacted, proposed budget cuts through House Appropriations Committee markups announced last week would not just slash funding for AmeriCorps and the American Climate Corps, but would irreparably set back national service in our country for years to come. Service Year Alliance is alarmed by these cuts and we urge Congress to not only reject this proposal but further bolster the FY24 enacted levels with an additional $345 million. Congratulations to the more than 200 individuals recognized with the Harris Wofford Joint Service Award at the Points of Light Conference in Houston, Texas! Your dedication to serving communities through AmeriCorps and Peace Corps is truly inspiring!
We had a great time celebrating national service and our members and alumni at the Points of Light Conference! AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith shares a message on the importance of service after meeting the Harris Wofford Joint Service Award recipients: During the Points of Light Conference, we gathered to honor extraordinary changemakers who have served in both the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, embodying national service and American citizenship at its very best. The Harris Wofford Joint Service Award is aptly named for one of the most extraordinary individuals I've ever known, Senator Harris Wofford. Harris studied Gandhi's approach to nonviolence in India. He was the first white student at Howard Law since the early 1900s. He marched arm in arm with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., serving as his lawyer. And as a close advisor to President Kennedy, Harris was instrumental in establishing the @Peace-Corps in 1961, recognizing the enduring power of global diplomacy delivered through service. Fast-forward three decades, and then Pennsylvania Senator Wofford played another key role in passing the legislation that gave birth to AmeriCorps in 1993, which he would lead two years later. In Harris' mind, Peace Corps and AmeriCorps were connected by a profound belief in the transformative power of service both at home and abroad. He knew that when you serve, you don't just change the world; you change yourself. Your horizons expand, your compassion grows, and your sense of civic duty comes alive. Recipients of the Harris Wofford Joint Service Award are the embodiment of Harris’s monumental legacy, and a brilliant reminder of the power of service to strengthen and transform our nation and the world. Demi Lovato is a courageously candid advocate committed to raising awareness about mental health. Their message in this video is a powerful example of our greatest strengths to address America’s youth mental health crisis: kindness, compassion, teamwork, urgency and action. The entire team at the Schultz Family Foundation is enormously grateful that Demi used their platform to spread the word about the country’s first Youth Mental Health Corps – a new program we created with Pinterest and AmeriCorps.
