Meet Josh Hoover, Sequoia Grove's Assistant Winemaker! Josh just completed his first harvest with us. Josh began his role as Assistant Winemaker at Sequoia Grove in spring of 2023. A California native, Josh worked in the hospitality industry for more than a decade during which he developed a deep love and passion for wine and the culture around it. His curiosity and drive took him next to Washington State where he learned more about wines from different regions. Ultimately, Josh was driven to return to California by a desire to make world class Cabernet. If you see him walking around the winery, be sure to say hello!

As we move into the harvest season, our team is hard at work bringing in the fruit that will become your future favorite wines. Yesterday morning, our crew hand picked our very own estate grown Sauvignon Blanc from State Lane in the Yountville AVA. Stay connected with us for behind-the-scenes glimpses of the grape harvesting process and the magic that happens in our vineyards.

We are pleased to announce that Sequoia Grove Winery’s first day of the highly anticipated 2023 harvest began yesterday, Tuesday, September 5th. During the cool early morning, we received pristine Sauvignon Blanc from Calistoga, the same initial grapes as last year, yet nearly 3 weeks later. The near-perfect growing season, with moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights for the past few months, has made it an excellent year for producing crisp, well-balanced white varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. We anticipate additional Sauvignon Blanc from our estate vineyard State Lane in Yountville to be harvested in the following week. Chardonnay from the Oak Knoll District should begin in the next few weeks with the Carneros vineyards towards the end of the month. Early red grape sampling points to another stellar vintage for our signature Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties, as the long-term forecast looks to be setting us up nicely for continued even ripening, outstanding complexity, and optimal tannin and color development. This season’s weather patterns have invoked similarities to the 2018 vintage, which includes great potential for intense and layered flavors, while maintaining fresh and lively acidity and wonderful structure and length. If mother nature continues to cooperate, we anticipate 2023 to be a benchmark vintage.   The first day of harvest is a truly exciting time. It is also a chance to take a moment for gratitude recognizing the bounty we receive each year and for the amazing team of people with whom we are lucky enough to work…particularly your commitment and dedication to excellence!   Thank you for all you do every day, it truly makes a difference. Cheers to you, to a successful holiday selling season, and conclusion to 2023.   Very best regards to you and your families,  Rick, Jesse, Bob, Jake, and the entire Sequoia Grove Team
