Supreme Court Overturns Chevron Deference Doctrine The landmark 6-3 ruling ends a 40-year-old precedent, shaking up whether and how Federal regulations can be upheld when challenged in a court of law. All healthcare industry stakeholders - including self-insured plan sponsors and their service providers - are on high alert for the potential flood of legal challenges. As the 2024 elections near, SIPAC (Self-Insurance Political Action Committee) is increasing campaign contributions to federal candidates who are likely to support policies beneficial to the self-insurance industry. This strategy allows representatives from the Self-Insurance Institute of America (SIIA) to directly engage with key policymakers through fundraising events and private meetings to promote a legislative agenda that is in the best interest of the self-insurance marketplace. SIIA and other employer groups support policies intended to increase access to mental health and substance use disorder benefits. However, a proposed Biden Administration regulation – that may be finalized soon – will increase costs for employers and unions sponsoring self-insured health plans. The Phia Group, a SIIA Diamond member company, hosted a fund-raising dinner last night in Boston benefitting the Self-Insurance Political Action Committee (SIPAC). The event raised more than $10,000, which will be used to make federal campaign contributions this election cycle to candidates who are positioned to support policy positions favorable to the self-insurance industry.
