After 20+ years in the field, from Researcher in Academia to CISO to Cybersecurity Vendor, here’s my take on things I most love and hate about cyber-security industry. Top Loves: ❤️ Bumping into the same familiar faces at conferences like RSA – it's a tight-knit crew! 🧠 Constant learning : things always change, and you need to stay on top of latest exploits and ways to defend. Security is an exciting field. 🦸♂️ We're making the world a safer place (since we are helping make the bad guys' job harder) 🤝 Amazing collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers. ⚡ Being in cyber-security teaches you how to make fast decisions with imperfect information, and think on your feet. Top Hates: 🤡 Too much noise and fake marketing at conferences – it’s a circus! Pop-corn machines, give aways, balloons - and mostly identical messaging from vendors. 😒 Best products don’t always win; big marketing budgets for sub-par products often sway CISO decisions. 💤 Too much budget goes to old-school technologies instead of innovative solutions. We have too many products, too much bloat, which don't make us safer. 🚫 Too many charlatans claiming expertise – high signal-to-noise ratio. 😓 Despite progress, breaches still happen – it feels like an endless battle. What did I miss? Share your favorite and least favorite things about working in cybersecurity! #security
