Second Story transforms the lives of young people by providing safe havens & opportunities for them to grow and thrive.
About us
The vision of Second Story is of a community in which all young people are safe, live in a nurturing environment and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Founded in 1972 as “Alternative House,” Second Story transforms the lives of children and youth, helping them stay safe, make positive decisions, achieve educational success, and overcome personal crises. We offer children, youth and families hope for brighter futures by providing counseling, shelter and neighborhood-based support. Through our Second Story for Teens in Crisis program, we give safe haven to teens who are homeless, leaving an abusive situation, or experiencing crisis. Through our Second Story for Young Mothers program, we offer a comprehensive program that includes housing, food, clothing, financial advising, and a path to stability for young mothers and their children. Through our Second Story for Homeless Youth program, we offer services and support to enable homeless young people to finish high school, start college, recover from trauma, and enter empowered adulthood. Through Second Story in the Community, we help low-income, disadvantaged youth connect to school and their community. We provide after-school tutoring, meals, learning experiences, and space for computer centers and clinics. We run family resource centers that distribute food, clothing, and other supplies, and link youth and families to financial advising, translation services, and more. We changed our name from "Alternative House" to "Second Story" in early 2017, to help reflect the broad array of programs that we offer. Learn more at www.second-story.org.

We are incredibly grateful to AKG DESIGN STUDIO for participating in Kelly's Cookie Challenge by ABW Appliances and supporting our mission to provide safe havens for youth and families experiencing homelessness. We watched a thrilling baking competition in support of Second Story, enjoyed delicious cookies, and many participated in a silent auction. If you weren't able to support the challenge, you can still make an impact by making a donation: https://buff.ly/3YIgS38

Wow this warms our heart to see so many people come together to support our young people! What a great day of impact!
Who says packing can't be fun? On Tuesday, our team joined NAIOP Northern Virginia's 13th annual Snack Pack event. Our Director of Estimating, Sam Metta, and Estimating Intern, Nate Perry, helped pack essential meals and snacks to support Second Story and the children in their after-school programs at the Culmore Teen Center in Falls Church, Virginia. Thank you, NAIOP and Second Story, for the opportunity to give back to our community! #TRINITYgc

Amazing turnout Wells + Associates! Thank you so much for dedicating your time, energy, and efforts to make sure young people have delicious snacks to boost their days! Many of these young people often deal with food insecurity or rely on their schools for nutritious meals and snacks. Thank you NAIOP Northern Virginia for bringing everyone together!
Our team at Wells + Associates had an incredible time volunteering at the Snack Pack event organized by NAIOP Northern Virginia. We were thrilled to join forces with amazing colleagues and friends to package food for the afterschool program Second Story. A huge shoutout to Lorrie D'Amico-Branch, Jessica Lake, HANNA POPESCU, Gloria Wright, Justin Schor, Michael Workosky, and Benita Queen-Stocks from NAIOP for making this event a success! It was an honor to contribute to such a meaningful cause. Together, we are making a difference, one snack pack at a time. 🍎🥪❤️

August 6 is the big day for the NAIOP Northern Virginia Snack Pack Event! We are excited to come together to support Second Story by providing essential snacks for their afterschool programs. Whether you're volunteering or sponsoring, your participation makes a huge impact. A special thanks to the NAIOP DL masterminds who worked hard these past few months and navigated through last-minute supply chain issues, like shipment of crushed mac ‘n cheese, to get it done. Our DL Philanthropy Co-chairs extraordinaire: Nicole Fiorucci, Wynn Hunsaker, CCIM, RPA and Nathan Tegarden and the Snack Pack Subcommittee Co-chairs: Samantha Mitchler, ACSRC, Maura Shannon and Danny Singleton. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the incredible organizations like The Brigade of Mercy that have supported our backpack drive. Each backpack contains spiral notebooks, filler paper, colored pencils, crayons, and pencil pouches filled with pens, pencils, scissors, and glue sticks. Your support ensures that every young person is prepared and ready to succeed in the upcoming school year. However, our work is not done yet. We are still looking for more people to join us in this mission. If you or your organization is interested in contributing or learning more about how you can help, please reach out volunteer@second-story.org

We’re instilling leadership qualities in our youth this summer through our Springfield Safe Youth Project Junior Leadership! By teaching them how to be good leaders, we’re helping them develop the skills and confidence they need to make a positive impact in their communities. They had an engaging workshop around gang prevention and helped organize groceries for their community ❤️ Thanks to your support, we can continue to offer our young people the joy, adventure, and valuable lessons they deserve! Please consider continuing our programs by making a donation: https://buff.ly/3c18jqX
