Meet Karmyn, a powerhouse who joined Second Harvest's speakers bureau in 2019. Inspired by her own journey with food insecurity, she's on a mission to amplify voices and educate the community about hunger and how we can fight it. Growing up in a Chicago suburb, Karmyn saw her mom struggle to put meals on the table for her and her brothers. After moving to San Jose, starting a family, and facing a divorce, Karmyn found herself relying on a food bank once more. She recalls, "Back in the '80s, food banks offered peanut butter, mac and cheese, and powdered milk. I love that Second Harvest provides fresh fruits, veggies, dairy, protein, and some dry goods. It's high quality." Karmyn said, "In the land of plentiful, no one should go to bed hungry or wonder where their next meal is going to be. We can all give a couple hours of our time or money. It’s just a matter of the heart and willingness.” 💪🧡 #50YearsofCommunity

Second Harvest's mission is to end hunger in our community.
About us
Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. Many of our drive-thru food distributions have transitioned back to farmers' market-style locations. 🥕🌽 This allows clients to choose what they want, reducing waste and honoring preferences. These sites also require more volunteers! Please consider volunteering at a farmers' market-style site this summer so we can continue to meet the increased level of need. 💪 #50YearsofVolunteering

“I am always limiting myself in things that are not essential, for example the internet. Right now, I don't have cable. We are limited in things that we don't need, things like clothes, shoes, all that. Not essential.” Reyna is a 49-year-old mother of two, who moved from Los Angeles to San Jose two years ago, only to find herself facing high housing prices. She lives with her husband and two teenage daughters, Jenny (15) and Leslie (17), in an ADU behind another house. While her husband works in construction, Reyna cleans homes one or two days a week. She has been attending the distribution at St. Vianney's for a year and a half and shared: "For me, this food has been so helpful because everything I receive, I use. It is something that has helped me from the moment I came here. I don't waste anything. I’m just happy that I can offer my kids healthy food so they can grow in so many aspects. That makes me feel good.” #50YearsofNourishment

Under the inspiring leadership of CEO Nicole Taylor, Silicon Valley Community Foundation has been a beacon of support and a catalyst for uniting nonprofits to better serve our community. We at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley are incredibly honored and grateful for our long-standing relationship with SVCF. When Nicole started, she said she wanted to put "community" back in the Community Foundation. Since then, she has consistently championed this mission and has proudly accomplished just that. SVCF’s unique understanding of local needs and their unwavering support have been vital, especially during challenging times. Their grants from the COVID-19 Response Fund, Emergency Relief Fund, and Voter Education Grants, in addition to educating philanthropists on local issues and facilitating contributions from Donor-Advised Funds, have been crucial to our efforts to end hunger in Silicon Valley. SVCF truly understands the challenges we as nonprofits face and works tirelessly to help donors address these issues effectively. We deeply appreciate their steadfast commitment to our community, which allows us to serve 1 in 6 people in Silicon Valley, ensuring equity and opportunity for all. Join us in celebrating Nicole Taylor’s achievements and the incredible impact of SVCF. Together, we are driving positive change and making our community stronger. #CommunityImpact #Philanthropy #Leadership #ThankYouSVCF

As this fiscal year comes to a close, we're thrilled to share the incredible advocacy victories we've achieved together despite state budget challenges: 🥗 Fully Funded CA School Meals for All: Secured an impressive $1.85 billion to ensure every child has access to nutritious school meals. 🍓 SUN Bucks (Summer EBT): Allocated $146.8 million in the budget for outreach and automation, providing an estimated $1 billion in federal food assistance for summer 2025. That's $120 per child for low-income families! 🍎 Market Match & Fruit and Veggie Pilot: Continued funding to help CalFresh recipients buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. 🌟 Food4All: Dedicated funds to expand a CalFresh-like benefit to immigrants over 55 who aren't eligible for federal CalFresh. Together, we're making strides to ensure no Californian goes hungry. Thank you for supporting our advocacy efforts! 🌟✨

Throwback Thursday! 🌟 Did you know that in 1974, The Food Bank started with a retired nine-year-old military pickup truck with a shaky clutch, delivering nearly 7,000 lbs of food in our first month? Our team was small but mighty, with just a director, a driver, a secretary, and a warehouse worker. Fast forward to today, and we now operate a fleet of 35 trucks! Last year alone, we distributed an average of 10 million pounds of food each month – that’s more than 250 truckloads! 🚚 💪 #ThrowbackThursday

“The people are wonderful here. The volunteers are super nice, they’re welcoming, they’re organized, and everything goes smoothly. And they like petting my dog." - Kevin Willie is a rescue dog from Arizona who lives in Half Moon Bay with his owner, Kevin. Together, they frequent a free grocery site distribution in San Mateo County. He shares, "Don’t be shy to come out and get food. There’s no judgment. It’s just people helping people.” #50YearsofCommunity
