About us
Seafood Nutrition Partnership® is a nonprofit focused on the mission to inspire a healthier America through partnerships and outreach that raise awareness about the essential nutritional benefits of eating seafood. What we eat matters for our health and our planet’s health, and our future food security. In 2015, public health officials revised the USDA/HHS Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to include the recommendation to eat seafood twice a week as part of a healthy diet. Unfortunately, 80-90 percent of Americans are not following this recommendation. According to NOAA and USDA, annual American per capita seafood consumption is 16 pounds. In comparison, Americans on average annually consume 73 pounds of poultry, 80 pounds of oils, 110 pounds of red meat, 140 pounds of sugar, and 600 pounds of dairy. Seafood’s essential nutritional benefits are supported by rigorous scientific research and prominent health organizations recommend eating seafood at least twice a week for brain health, heart health, and eye health. Seafood Nutrition Partnership commits to building awareness of seafood’s essential health benefits in the prevention of heart disease, support brain health, and developing the tools and resources necessary to easily incorporate seafood into today’s American diet through education and awareness.

Last night was a success! Seafood Nutrition Partnership hosted an Eating for Brain Health fundraising dinner at Erling Jensen The Restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2022, The White House recognized our commitment to develop Eating for Brain Health (EFBH) nutrition programs nationwide through 2030. EFBH nutrition programs work with local community organizations to educate and empower underserved populations to affordably incorporate seafood for a healthy diet. The Eating for Brain Health fundraising dinners garner local support, collaboration, and awareness of these programs in the communities in which they operate. SNP is excited to work with Church Health & YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South this October as part of National Seafood Month. Thank you to Linda Lai Cornish, MBA and Iona Yates for organizing and to all who attended last night's dinner! A new report finds that women and children are not eating enough seafood. The study, released by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM Health and Medicine Division) and backed by the FDA, recommends further development to increase seafood consumption by children and women who might become pregnant or are breastfeeding. Dr. Tom Brenna, the chair of Seafood Nutrition Partnership's Scientific Nutrition Advisory Council (SNAC), said eating seafood can significantly reduce birth risks and improve the health of the mother and her baby. "The abundant scientific evidence is strong that expectant moms should eat more seafood to support baby brain development. Moms who eat seafood while pregnant have babies with higher IQs. We applaud the FDA for recognizing that moms and kids fall woefully low in seafood consumption compared to the DGA."
