Throughout July, we are celebrating Disability Pride Month! Today, we are honoring Connie Panzarino. Connie was a disability rights activist, writer, and art therapist. She used her experience with systemic discrimination against LGBTQ+ and the disabled communities to advocate for change. Her work largely helped pass Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1963. A White House spokesperson said that the Biden administration opposes gender-affirming surgery, for trans minors, saying that it believes surgeries should be limited to adults. In response to this news, SAGE CEO Michael Adams issued the following statement: "Over and over again, trans elders make it clear that they stand with trans youth. Last night’s announcement from the Biden administration on denying health care to trans youth is wrong-headed and should be reversed. Our partners at the Administration for Community Living remind us that the LGBTQI+ community includes people of all ages, with and without disabilities. #LGBTQI+ people often face additional barriers to getting the services and care they need to maintain their health and independence. For example, more than half of LGBTQI+ adults report experiencing discrimination in health care, and many avoid seeking health care services due to fear of discrimination. As a result, discrimination is a primary cause for the health disparities experienced by the LGBTQI+ community.
