Reimbursements for #OccupationalTherapy and #PhysicalTherapy are set to be slashed in 2025 by Medicare. These cuts go against the evidence. PT and OT are known to be cost-saving high-value services that help keep people independent as they age and prevent lower-value and more invasive treatments like medications and surgery (https://www.valueofpt.com/). We applaud that Medicare has embraced digital therapies, but this should not be at the expense of face-to-face therapies. The two complement one another. #fairpay #OT #PT #physiotherapy #medicare https://lnkd.in/e2rT5EBY
About us
RxGames is a treatment multiplier. We deliver at-home therapy patients enjoy and evidence-based insights for providers. RxGames benefits: - Boost adherence: Patients can complete ~3 hours per week of home exercise (Gauthier, eClinicalMedicine, 2022) - Keep patients engaged: Patient attrition is ~50% lower when using remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) with RxGames (Gauthier, eClinicalMedicine, 2022) - Improve outcomes: Review data on the frequency and duration of your patient’s home sessions and on the quality of their movements. Personalize the exercises based on which are yielding the best results. - Boost revenue: Providers can generate $42K of additional value-based revenue through RTM How it works: We create therapy games that run on cell phones and laptop computers. The patient’s physical movements drive gameplay. Numerous studies have shown that playing a game is much more engaging than following along with a video or reading a handout. Our games are designed collaboratively by therapists, scientists, and patients to train balance, strengthen the core, restore function to extremities, and improve cardio fitness. Additionally, our games were purpose-built to augment the care delivered by therapists in clinics and telehealth settings.

This podcast is an oldie but a goodie. Our friend Nancy shares her story of stroke recovery through video games. We still have the Recovery Rapids game as part of our neuro program, but now its on mobile devices to make it more accessible. https://lnkd.in/eTgJpDiG

MS was one of the first populations that we studied with our game-based approach. Exercise is in the clinical best practice guidelines and people with MS are very motivated to access exercise (about 7 hours per week light to moderate intensity exercise on average with our games). Therapists, please don’t put kid gloves on with this population. They need and appreciate the intensity. Work by Victor Mark also showed long-term retention of clinical gains (5+ years) from very intensive movement therapy with behavior change techniques. Exercise seems to really slow down disability progression and preserve independence. All patients with MS should be offered remote therapy monitoring of an intensive home exercise program if they don’t exercise at least 150 minutes per week. #multiplesclerosis #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #neurology
The latest newsletter from the Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis features an article highlighting the importance of physical activity for people with multiple sclerosis. It lists multiple types of exercise and their associated benefits. The Exercise Neuroscience Research Laboratory at UIC is currently conducting research through multiple studies to further determine the effects of exercise on various outcomes related to MS. I saw this on the Dr. Miro Bada blog and it really sums up what is needed to adhere to an #exercise program. Of course doing it tired is hard and it is important to have a health professional, family member or friend help with the motivation. #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy.

Interesting study. We’ve also observed that people who play some of our games that set a fast pace may exercise harder than when they play one of our self-paced games. However, self-pacing may be important for people who experience crippling fatigue. No matter which way you slice it, exercise is good for you and having choices of how you pace that exercise is important. #multiplesclerosis #exerciseismedicine #physiotherapy
Aerobic exercise has many benefits—benefits that could be very helpful to people with multiple sclerosis (MS), who often struggle with fatigue and weakness. A recent study has examined whether a new method called forced-rate exercise (FE) can be used to help individuals with MS benefit from aerobic exercise. (Spoiler alert: it can). 📇 Just published! https://lnkd.in/gkBJrAyW So excited to share our qualitative study investigating the acceptability of modified constraint-induced movement therapy among stroke survivors and carers in an early-supported discharge rehab service. A team effort with Barbara Singer, Erin Godecke and our lived experience partners. We interviewed 15 stroke survivors and 10 carers to learn about their experiences of participating (or supporting) a mCIMT program. What did they think? - stroke survivors felt that mCIMT programs provided structure to their day while navigating the changes associated with transitioning home after stroke - they saw benefits for mCIMT in improving upper limb function compared to other interventions - while challenging, mCIMT was achievable and improvements in arm use spurred further motivation - all stroke survivors wanted a longer program (4 weeks instead of 2) - carers saw behaviour change in stroke survivors as they began to use the stroke-affected arm in daily tasks, without prompting - mCIMT programs did not add to carer stress, rather that provided guidance and hope for the future What does this mean? - mCIMT is acceptable in the ESD rehab setting and we should be offering it to all eligible stroke survivors - as therapists, we shouldn’t place limits on patients by assuming therapy is too intense, or that it would add to carer stress - we should give stroke survivors and carers choice to participate, rather than making that decision for them Have a read and let me know what you think!
