You can now listen to the entire first season of the Funding Rural (www.FundingRural.com) podcast on your favorite streaming platforms. For those of you who have taken a listen, what’s sticking with you? Which shows stand out to you —and why? These first 17 episodes of Funding Rural highlighted inspiring people who are doing hard work and heavy lifting in rural systems today. The hope is that the show can bring more understanding, spark more conversations, and get us all asking better questions as funders, philanthropists and Americans. As of the latest study, just 7% of philanthropic funding nationally goes to rural communities — and 0.4% to Native American Tribes and spaces. These are stats that Roundhouse Foundation strives to change. It was fitting to end the first season, last week, with Erik Brodt (Ojibwe), who offers this guidance, “If you show up and you ask questions differently, or if you ask the questions and then you pause to listen for an answer that might be different than what you were hoping for or expecting, you might learn a lot that day.” A big ’thank you’ to all the Funding Rural guests who graciously shared their experiences in rural and Tribal spaces: Elizabeth Marino (Oregon State University-Cascades), Wynn Rosser (T. L. L. Temple Foundation), Kali Thorne Ladd (Children's Institute), Julie Garreau (Cheyenne River Youth Project), Zavier Borja, C'Ardiss Gardner Gleser, Allen Smart, Lesli Allison (Western Landowners Alliance), Barton Robison (Willamette Partnership), Margi Hoffmann (USDA Rural Development), Belinda Brown (Lomakatsi Restoration Project), Tony Pipa (Reimagine Rural, The Brookings Institution), Cari (Logan) Cullen (Center for Disaster Philanthropy), Brenda Smith (High Desert Partnership), Torsten Kjellstrand (University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication), Jamie Bennett (Americans for the Arts), Erik Brodt (Northwest Native American Center of Excellence at OHSU). Pre-production is now underway for Funding Rural Season 2 (surprise!). Please share your thoughts on Season 1 and help influence the conversations yet to come. #fundingrural #ruralfunding #rural #philanthropy #ruralphilanthropy #systemschange

Grant Program Director Rebeckah Berry, MS, MCHES® attended Grantmakers In Health Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy in Portland, OR earlier this month alongside 600+ attendees and speakers from across the United States and Tribal Nations. "I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with colleagues and grant partners,” says Rebeckah. “The innovative and thought-provoking ways these groups collaborate to improve health and well-being across the country is remarkable." The conference officially launched with on-site and off-site experiences intended to advance a movement for health equity. A wide range of topics were discussed at the conference, such as: self-inflicted and firearm violence toward others, mental health struggles, optimizing well-being of older adults, and philanthropy's role in leveraging public funding. #RoundhouseFoundation #grantmakers #health

Rural communities have many culturally significant sites and events planned this summer. Here's a recommendation from Eastern Oregon: Crossroads Carnegie Art Center in Baker City invites you to visit the Grand Opening of the “Towards Home: The Art of Gary Ernest Smith” exhibit, which opens May 24th. Gary was born and raised in Medical Springs on a working cattle ranch, and his parents encouraged his early artistic promise. After service in Vietnam, Gary came home and started his journey to become one of the "Standard Bearers" of Contemporary Western Art. Gary E. Smith set his final retrospective of his career in his home county at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, where more than 80 of his art pieces will be on display. 🗓️ Throughout the event (May 24th to July 21st), Crossroads will be open 7 days a week, from 10 am to 5 pm. Families are welcome. Many events will be scheduled around town in honor of Gary E. Smith’s return, view more information like where to park, fun itineraries, and an event schedule at: https://lnkd.in/g47r2FmF Roundhouse Foundation is a supporter of general operations for Crossroads Carnegie Art Center. #CrossroadsCarnegieArtCenter #TowardsHome #GaryErnestSmith #GaryESmith #WesternArt #BakerCity

After 5 years, the Kiwanis Outdoor Art Classroom at the Lincoln City Cultural Center is finally complete! 🎨 Despite challenges during the pandemic, the team at Lincoln City Cultural Center persevered, and the result is spectacular. They’ve transformed their plaza into a vibrant space featuring a stunning concrete octopus surrounded by mosaic bubbles, all created by local artists. 👀 Come see the beautiful new space for yourself on May 25th at their “Plaza Palooza” event from 1-3 p.m. There will be yummy cake and lemonade toasts to celebrate the completion of the Kiwanis Outdoor Art Classroom. The Roundhouse Foundation is grateful to support this incredible community space. 🐙✨ #CommunityTransformation #GrantStories #RoundhouseFoundation #LincolnCity #KiwanisClub

Our Executive Director, Erin Borla recently joined partners from Constructing a Brighter Future while they presented at the Oregon Association of Education Service Districts. This initiative that began as "Sheds of Hope" after the 2020 Holiday Farm Fire, has grown to involve students across Lane County, building transitional "Cottages of Hope" for houseless neighbors. Now, as Team Oregon Build, the project continues to evolve, teaching middle and high school students valuable construction skills while fostering empathy and community engagement. We're honored to be part of this impactful journey.
Advocate & funder of rural and Indigenous spaces. 🫲 Roundhouse Foundation Trustee and E.D. 🎧 Funding Rural podcast host. 🌲Passionate about pine cones.💡I’m curious about your rural funding experience.
Yesterday I was able to join our partners from Constructing a Brighter Future while they presented at the Oregon Association of Education Service Districts. What started as a "Sheds of Hope" project after the Holiday Farm Fire in 2020; by 2023 had grown to include students at 19 schools across Lane County to build transitional “Cottages of Hope” for houseless neighbors. Check out the student-directed/led video of the shed project in the McKenzie Valley https://lnkd.in/gs2w26s4 Now in 2024, it has evolved into Team Oregon Build, which kicked off just 6 weeks ago and is in three different regions in Oregon. Middle and High School students build sheds, transitional single-room shelters, and other items to donate to community organizations, all while learning construction skills, empathy, the power of volunteering and how they can engage and support their communities. Is your school or community interested in learning about this project? Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gWUYPRkE Thanks to lee kounovsky and Shareen Vogel with Lane Community College and LANE ESD SCHOOL DISTRICT; Gabe Piechowicz with Everyone Village, Jesse Quinn with Lane Workforce Partnership; John Stapleton at Pivot Architects, and Wheylin Niehus at Future Build for making this project a reality. This program is impacting so many students, communities and lives - thank you for letting Roundhouse Foundation participate and elevate this incredible work. #shedsofhope #lanecounty #CTE #employability #studentsuccess #constructiontrades

Susan Robinson, Roundhouse Foundation Finance and Special Projects Manager grew up in Harney County, and recently visited the new Geno’s Youth Center which will house Kids Club of Harney County programs very soon. On our blog, Susan explains that she grew up amongst former Oregon Senator Geno Timm and his family who owned the Alpine Creamery, and donated the land for the youth center. As an honor to Gino Timm’s family, elements of the creamery are cleverly included in the design of the youth center: 🥛Creamery cans incorporated into the coffee tables and end tables 🧈🧈 Butter wrappers from Alpine Creamery serve as wallpaper on one special wall 🍨 Vintage ice cream coolers will serve as planters in the entry, creamery conveyors are fireplace mantles and there are creamery and distributorship memorabilia throughout the welcoming center. We're thrilled to also support KIDS CLUB OF HARNEY COUNTY's expansion of afterschool programs! Read more about Kids Club of Harney County on our website. #GrantImpact #HarneyCounty #RoundhouseFoundation #FundingRural

Last week, the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Department visited Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts & Agriculture to provide fire safety training 🚒 The firemen gave our staff, some of whom had never used a fire extinguisher, real-life experience putting out flames. 🧯 Pro tip: Shoot the fire extinguisher fluid at the base instead of directly on a fire. That way, the fire's fuel source is extinguished. #stafftraining #roundhousefoundation #sistersoregon #firemen
