I was out grilling the other evening when I felt a distinct bite on my ankle. Looking down, I didn't see the usual suspect (mosquitoes); in fact, I didn't see anything. My initial reaction: Was I heading down the path towards delusions of parasitosis?? Actually, there are a number of true bugs that will take a blood meal on occasion. This is a minute pirate bug nymph (Arrrgh, one of the best insect common names out there IMO!)--at ~1.5mm in length "minute" sums it up nicely. The adults, which can fly, bite somewhat regularly, but I've never been dined on by a nymph before. I'm impressed the thing was able to get on me at all. They are beneficial predators in the garden, so after the photo shoot (shiver me timbers--look at that dinky bloodmeal!) it was back onto my lettuce plants for this minute pirate.

Red Milkweed Beetle (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) - A bright red beetle with black spots that hangs out on green plants? You can’t miss it. Why would an insect want to call attention to itself unless it was unafraid of predators. Sure enough, the milkweed beetle feeds on milkweed, a poisonous plant, but instead of getting poisoned, it stores the toxins in its tissues and becomes poisonous to any would-be predators. Then it advertises that fact by showing up in a flash of contrasting colors, to make sure all the bug-eaters know it’s there.
