As a criminologist and health services researcher, Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium (RGVRC) Affiliate Scholar Lauren A. Magee has spent the last decade working to understand the emotional and social effects of nonfatal shootings, as these incidents occur twice as often as firearm-related deaths. In a new blog incorporating gun violence survivors' voices, Magee details the myriad ways survivors pick themselves up after being shot and how communities can better support them in their recovery. https://lnkd.in/ecnWkRpN

Gun violence survivors often have to figure out on their own how to shoulder the immediate financial fallout of gun violence. This includes funerals, medical and therapy expenses, and working a job while trying to navigate their trauma and grief. A new blog from Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium Affiliate Scholar Jennifer Carlson looks at some of the paths survivors take to help them through these unexpected expenses. https://lnkd.in/exEa_FSD

Findings from a new research project from the Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium (RGVRC) shed light on the needs of individuals impacted by mass public shootings. The project, which collected survey responses from more than 165 people across 48 communities affected by mass shootings in the US, found that social acknowledgment is one of the most helpful resources for survivors and that it can help protect against the negative effects of trauma. Also released today is a video featuring interviews with ten mass shooting survivors from different communities across the US discussing the importance of social acknowledgment in their paths toward resiliency. Each June presents an opportunity to raise awareness about a pressing issue in our nation: the impacts of gun violence. During National Gun Violence Awareness Month, many facts and figures are shared about gun violence, such as how many lives are lost and how many people are injured in both intentional and unintentional incidents each year. In reality, the toll of gun violence is far greater than these numbers convey—it also includes many individuals whose experiences often are not seen or spoken about. In the first in a series of blogs raising awareness about different components of the American gun violence crisis, Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium Executive Director Jaclyn Schildkraut shares findings from ongoing research into how best to support survivors of mass public shootings.
