In light of increasing wildfire threats, we're committed to developing innovative solutions that can help anticipate, prevent, and mitigate the impact of wildfires. GridFIRM, short for Fire Ignition Reduction and Mitigation, is a leading wildfire intelligence software application specifically designed for electric utilities to assess wildfire risks and understand how to better prevent ignition. This past weekend Hurricane Beryl tore through much eastern Texas, tragically claiming 10 lives and causing serious destruction across the region. As communities mourn the loss of loved ones and pick up pieces from the storm, we begin to ask how this storm seemed to have caught the region off guard. When Beryl pushed through Houston, it had already been downgraded to a Category 1 storm. Rainfall data from the Houston Chronicle illustrates how Beryl stacked up to other recent storms. The rainfall data shows that in some areas, Beryl’s rainfall was lower, but still comparable to more recent Category 4 hurricane Harvey and Category 2 storm Ike. As climate change contributes to evolving characteristics of hurricanes, we’re witnessing more storms with intense rainfall, even if their wind speeds are lower. This idea lends to the importance of not underestimating the potential impact of downgraded storms. Flooding and water damage can be just as devastating as high winds, and communities must be prepared for these threats regardless of a storm’s category. Cleantech Group just wrapped up a timely study on how new grid enhancing technologies can supercharge grid resilience. With extreme weather events on the rise, using this tech to keep our grid strong has never been more crucial. Reporter Zainab G. highlights a Climate Central, Inc. study, revealing that "...there were at least twice as many weather-related outages in the latter half of the decade (2014-2023) than in the first ten years (2000-2009)." Yikes! But here's the silver lining: as weather risks ramp up, so do the number of cool new tech solutions to boost resilience. The tricky part? Deciding which upgrades to roll out and where. Welcome to the Rhizome team! We're welcoming Christina Merullo as our Business Operations Intern. Christina joins us from The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth where she's working on her MBA. Sustainability and resilience have been a driving force throughout Christina's career, where she's managed key relationships with utility partners and other leaders in the climate space. We're excited to have Christina join us in enabling resilience in the face of climate change.

She covered how we're bringing climate-related intelligence to the utility sector and creating constantly-updated pictures of grid vulnerabilities -- all powered with AI. "Think about the power line that goes down in your neighborhood," said Rhizome CEO Mishal Thadani. "We can assess risk on that whole power line so that the utility can prioritize if they need to make some sort of investment -- whether they underground it, whether they should replace the poles, whether they should trim the trees along that power line ..."
