ICE’s disturbing pattern of extrajudicial killings are a human rights crisis. Since 2015, ICE agents have killed dozens of times, firing guns at unarmed people and in public places like parking lots and traffic intersections. As threats of mass deportations circulate, ICE now stands on the verge of a massive influx of weapons and resources. Regardless of immigration status, ICE’s rogue agents pose a deadly threat to all of us.
ICE agents shot at someone 59 times from 2015 to 2021, killing 23 people, according to government records obtained by Business Insider. But it’s impossible to know why agents fired their weapons because the agency won’t tell us. It won’t even tell us when the agency’s policy allows agents to shoot at people or use other types of force. Of ICE’s 13-page Use of Force Policy, all but two sentences are blacked out. We are encouraged by the news of the ongoing prisoner swap that would result in the release of The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich, Vladimir Kara-Murza, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Alsu Kurmasheva, among others. We call on #Russia to release other jailed journalists and pro-democracy activists and stop attacking #PressFreedom and dissent!
Today is a joyous day for the safe return of our colleague Evan Gershkovich. We are so grateful for all the voices that were raised when his was silent. We can finally say, in unison, “Welcome home, Evan.” Read Emma Tucker’s full letter.

The #DEI backlash has been misconstrued into the belief that historically marginalized communities are somehow less qualified for their roles. In reality, DEI not only supports underrepresented communities, but also benefits the majority by bringing diverse perspectives into the workplace and schools! Diverse teams are crucial to providing unique perspectives needed to overcome society’s largest challenges, from climate change, to the ethical development and deployment of artificial intelligence, to #EconomicEquality for racial and gender minorities, to mass incarceration—issues core to the work of the Business and Human Rights team at RFK Human Rights. RFKHR's Director of Business and Human Rights Fanta NGom, MPH and Weil Legal Innovator Fellow Kavya Chaturvedi discuss the importance of prioritizing DEI efforts and pushing back against disingenuous arguments ⬇️ https://rfkhro.org/3Wx58Ov

Almost 70% of wrongful convictions of children aged 12 to 15 come from false confessions made without an adult present, obtained through police bullying, intimidation, and threats. New York’s proposed Youth Interrogation Bill (S1099/A1963) will ensure that no child faces police intimidation alone, guaranteeing a right to counsel at police interrogations. Our team at RFK Human Rights wrote about the bill’s importance in the New York Daily News. Learn more below.
