🌍 Impact gaps are fundamentally financing gaps. To reduce mismanaged waste by 90% by 2040, we need to invest $5.2 trillion annually into our circular economy. The UN Global Plastics Treaty offers a guiding vision for tackling plastic waste, but achieving this requires substantial financial investments from the private sector. $5.2 trillion sounds intimidating. The Pacific coast of Colombia is a preferred breeding ground for humpback whales, and plastic pollution leaking into the oceans here is a direct threat to them. Our project here - Paraíso de Ballenas - recovers and recycles plastic waste from beaches in Buenaventura: a region lacking proper waste collection systems. Lakshmi Bai has changed her life - from being an informal waste picker, dependent on scavenging daily; to a formally recognized waste worker with assured salary and dignity, paying for her children's education. Here's her story: Lakshmi is part of rePurpose Global’s project Anant Pranay in Maharashtra, India, operated in association with CARPE | EcoSattva “I’m grateful to Project Anant Pranay for changing my lifestyle and empowering me to establish my own place in society. When I first started working, I would earn my livelihood by collecting scraps from garbage that was strewn across the city. It was impossible for me to sustain my family of four because my daily wages were not guaranteed; it was up to how much I was able to scavenge on that particular day. I was often met with distrust since I was trying to find something valuable from others’ trash; not even a glass of water was offered in times of need. I came across this opportunity through an acquaintance — when I visited the material recovery facility in Aurangabad, I was immediately impressed! I began working there in 2018. I no longer have to sift through garbage with my bare hands; we are given protective gear as well as a uniform, and even have access to clean drinking water along with basic monthly groceries.
