What makes a successful climate plan in the food and ag sector? 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 A transparent plan is clear on the data collection, monitoring and reporting methods used in a given plan and the methodologies used to baseline emissions and estimate outcomes. Transparency ensures value for outcomes and supports a strong market for ecosystem outcomes. 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 In order to close the gap between our current state and our goal state, programs and methods must be widely applicable across commodities and sourcing regions, and must scale cost-effectively. This will allow the agrifood industry to establish broad guidelines for operation, and will allow agrifood companies to build programs that achieve the necessary impact at the scale of their sourcing. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 Industry standards and protocols are evolving alongside the industry. A strong climate-forward plan will be rigorous enough to meet the requirements of current protocols, and to stay relevant as protocols adjust guidelines and processes. Taking climate action with these pillars in mind is key to closing the Impact Gap between the food and ag industry's current trajectory and its 2030 net zero commitments. Despite some of the industry wide shortcomings on climate action, there are many examples of companies building emissions reductions plans the right way. What are some of the biggest roadblocks facing food and ag companies as they develop a strong climate action plan? And how can they be overcome? 🚩 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤: 𝐈𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬. You can’t make progress if you don’t know where you’re starting. Inaccurate or generic baseline data leads to a lack of transparency in building a climate action plan. 🟢 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫, 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬. Data should be specific to a company’s supply shed, and should be dynamically updated as agricultural seasons change and climate and farm management practices change. Using granular data is the best way to understand the current state of your scope 3 emissions, and build an action plan to meet your goals. 🚩 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤: 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬. In the past, there was little to no guidance on how corporations should calculate emissions baselines or take inventory of scope 3 emissions. This lack of guidance led to ambiguity around accounting and reporting processes, and in some cases has led companies to withhold information on their climate efforts (otherwise known as “greenhushing”). 🟢 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Emerging guidelines from Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and Science Based Targets initiative's Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance have provided more clarity on the requirements for methodology to be considered compliant. 🚩 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤: 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. Many companies lack a clear picture of the potential impact of emissions reduction efforts in priority commodities and supply sheds. This lack of clarity can leave leaders in ‘analysis paralysis’ when it comes to investing in emissions reduction programs. 🟢 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭. Estimate the abatement potential of emissions reduction strategies. Robust estimates can help leaders build a business case for investing in agriculture resilience, marshal the support and resources across the organization, and prioritize strategies that will result in most impact achieved. Regrow’s Agriculture Resilience Platform is helping the world’s leading food and ag companies overcome these roadblocks every day. Our mission at Regrow is to make agriculture resilient, globally. But what exactly does “resilience” mean? And why should we strive to build resilience *over* simply meeting sustainability goals? Resilience means: • 𝗬𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 for farm productivity and the ability to avoid losses due to extreme weather events • 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 across all agricultural commodities so we can assure future food supply • 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 for farming communities, and for all businesses involved in agriculture of food production Sustainability at its core means sustaining something as it is, keeping it at the same level. We know, however, that our current global food system is not “sustainable.” Even if we reduce our current impact, we won’t be operating within the boundaries of our planet. Between now and 2030, given the current rate of emissions and the lagging pace of climate action, we will likely experience a more volatile climate and more frequent catastrophic weather events, against which we need to fortify our industry and core agriculture production regions. In order to achieve this, we need to invest in regenerative practices to restore soil health, including the soil’s nutrient balance, its water holding capacity and its ability to produce enough food to support our growing population. 🌍 🌿 The #beef industry has a significant role to play in #climate action. But corporate #greenwashing has been an issue across the #agrifood industry, and we need to be cautious about making and reporting real progress. In our latest blog post, experts Regrow's Devon Long and AgriWebb's Nicole Buckley Biggs explore how companies can transition from false claims to meaningful, measurable climate strategies. 🔎 How we do it: 1. Producer Engagement: Empowering grazing operations owners to adopt climate-smart practices. 2. Rigorous Measurement & Monitoring: Utilizing new technologies for accurate, scalable measurement. 3. Economic Incentives: Aligning sustainability with financial support for producers. Discover how these strategies can drive change, build #AgricultureResilience and set a new standard for #climateaction in the beef industry. 🐮 https://lnkd.in/gwSa-Aw2   #FutureofFood #TeamRegrow #emissionsreduction #carbon

What’s the current state of sustainability commitments for the world’s leading food and ag brands? We recently surveyed 60+ businesses in the Fortune 1000 and top private companies in terms of reported revenue and discovered an important gap… 👣 99% have GHG emissions reduction goals. 💧 90% have water goals. 🌽 80% have regen ag commitments, and more than 60% have biodiversity goals. But digging one layer deeper, we found that far fewer orgs had 𝗾̲𝘂̲𝗮̲𝗻̲𝘁̲𝗶̲𝗳̲𝗶̲𝗲̲𝗱̲ goals, simply meaning they put a number against it. 👣 94% have quantified GHG emissions reduction goals - not bad! 💧 41% have quantified water goals - meaning less than half of the companies that set a goal made it measurable. 🌽 36% have quantified regen ag commitments, and only 12% for biodiversity - companies are clearly struggling with what and how to measure these outcomes. Remember: commitments are only as valid as they are specific. It’s time to put some hard numbers behind sustainability goals and establish scientifically rigorous methods for measuring progress. #ClimateAction #FutureofFood #agriculture #sustainableagriculture

In the wake of the Russian invasion, Ukraine is being forced to rebuild many of its agricultural systems. Central to that rebuilding effort is a focus on #regenerativeagriculture: an approach to farming that prioritizes #soil health, allowing soil to become more nutrient-dense and resilient. These practices also reduce emissions and establish crops that are more resilient to climate change. We’re proud to see Ukraine, often referred to as Europe’s ‘breadbasket,’ on a path toward health and resilience, caring for the Earth and its inhabitants despite the devastation the country has endured. Regrow is proud to partner with I.P.Cert in this effort. Together, we’re working to accelerate the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices across Ukraine and reward farmers for their efforts in building #AgricultureResilience. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? Rice farming accounts for approximately 12% of global methane emissions and consumes around 40% of global irrigation water (source: World Wildlife Fund). Addressing the ecosystem impacts of rice production is one of the most important steps towards building a more resilient food system. That's why we're especially proud of the work we're doing alongside Mars, Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) and ISEAL to quantify the positive impact of climate smart practices in rice cultivation. Monitoring practice changes, accurately and transparently quantifying the outcomes of those practices, and helping growers see the benefits of those practices on their operations can all build credibility and increase adoption rates for climate-smart rice production. Increased credibility and adoption often leads to increased demand for — and investment in — rice programs, which can in turn bring even more farmers and acres into the fold. We're excited to continue working with our partners to transform global rice production! #ClimateAction #FutureofFood #agriculture #sustainableagriculture
