Having spent a few years in HR, the question I most often get, particularly from young people, is how to break into a field with no experience. It's a tough question that I've often struggled to answer. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of organizations that help young people find entry level positions. Rather, things usually happen because someone knows someone who knows someone. For those that grew up economically disadvantaged with barriers to access, the challenge of finding a good career becomes even more difficult. I don't know how many have heard of ReGroup Carolinas (yet), but it is a wonderful organization whose goal is to improve economic mobility in the community (Charlotte area) by decreasing the skills gap in the construction trades. ReGroup provides economic support to a number of organizations, including ROC Charlotte and She Built this City. Those organizations focus on skills training for high school students interested in construction careers. ReGroup Carolinas is holding a fundraising event on May 18. A link to tickets and a flyer for the event are below. Southside Watt will be performing. I've not yet seen them, but I've heard great things. I hope to see you on the 18th!
