This spring we announced an open call for the ReadyLaunch grant for women and non-binary designers and got hundreds of applications. It was quite a task to evaluate all the beautiful ideas and come up with just four grantees. "Both Designing Women and Readymag are about intentional action, consistent and strategic support of creativity, ‘touching hearts’, and connecting individuals and communities with ideas and opportunities. With that in mind, we focused on designing our grading system fairly, assessing the projects individually and as a whole, and making sure we selected the ones with a clearly formulated scope and the potential to shift the status quo in their respective, even if seemingly narrow, areas of interest." —Alya Datii, Head of Brand Marketing at Readymag. "Design is a form of editing. I always try to have a clear idea and a concept, and let every detail correspond to that concept. That’s why I sit on things forever." —Jop van Bennekom Jop van Bennekom co-founded BUTT magazine, Fantastic Man, and The Gentlewoman Magazine—publications that have redefined the media landscape. Here, design professionals share which factors they consider when setting prices, what they think of market research, and what mistakes can occur in the process. → “The quality and interest of the project are very important: who the customer is, how complicated the approval process will be, and how much time I’ll spend on discussions, presentations, and persuasion. If people approach me with a large project but they trust me completely, it’s more interesting to me than a project on which I’ll have to go through a myriad of steps. In such cases, I’ll set a higher price and be stricter in specifying the terms.” Alexander Moskovskiy, product designer at Readymag who sometimes takes on freelance projects. → “Knowing market rates is very important. In the Netherlands, the rates are quite different compared to the US, for example. Still, you’re delivering the same type of work, so if you’re focusing on a different market, you should use those rates. Otherwise, you risk underpricing or overpricing yourself.” Sebastiaan Scheer, UX design director with 15 years of experience who now focuses on consulting and mentoring. → “The main pitfalls are never increasing your rates or raising them too often. A good rule of thumb is that if you land 75% of the projects you quote, your rate is likely appropriate. If everything gets accepted, it’s a sign that you should consider raising your rates. It’s also about how you position yourself—some freelancers aim for one really lucrative project, while others prefer to have all of their projects accepted at a lower rate. It’s a balance between security and freedom!” Anton Stén, a product designer who has been freelancing for over 15 years and recently shifted to a full-time position. Odding Wang started out as an architecture researcher, but carved her way into the world of graphic and motion design. She’s won several international awards, and worked with Nike, McDonald’s, and other big brands. "I was looking into tools that allow for designing editorials and came across nice layouts made with Readymag. I tried the functionality and started building my personal websites with the tool. I ended up using it not only for my passion projects but also to share prototypes with my clients since it’s very easy to update the layouts—change what you want, press the button, then refresh the page."
