The only source for unbiased, third-party data and insight on freight railway network conditions, performance, & volume.

About us

We’ve created a network of sensors that tracks every train — not just those with your cars — and creates unique profiles for every one. Our sensors gather the passing time, direction, speed, type and information about each car in the train. For cars carrying dangerous goods, we capture the UN number on the placard. Our Business Intelligence (BI) tools then allow us to organize and track train data across the railway network. The result? Actionable insights on the railway freight network which equates to improved performance, and millions of dollars saved per year.

Jasper is a special place so many of us hold dear and the reports of destruction are devastating.  We hope for the continued safety of the emergency responders and CN crews working tirelessly to protect these communities, and all the residents who have been impacted.

**New update on the shutdown of CN's main line** The Jasper Wildfire which has led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from the area, led Canadian National (CN) to officially shut down service through the region on July 23.    An analysis of RailState’s network rail data shows that train movements through the area effectively shut down days earlier and a significant backlog has developed over the past 48 hours. Backlogs:  With the main line closed, significant backlogs have built up, particularly on westbound movements from Alberta and eastbound movements out of the Port of Vancouver. RailState has identified at least 5 trains held near Hinton and another 13 held between Stony Plain, AB and Hinton since July 22: 6 intermodal trains 5 grain unit trains 5 manifest trains 2 tank car unit trains Out of the Port of Vancouver, RailState has identified 25 trains in the Kamloops area that would be expected to move east. Read our latest report to get the full picture of the impact of this devastating fire and stay up to date with RailState as we provide independent data on recovery efforts and how your supply chain may be affected. https://lnkd.in/ep7zrwXN

Can you believe that this week's forecast is slightly COOLER than some recent temps in Needles, CA?? On July 5, Needles hit a record 🔥 122 Fahrenheit (50C) 🔥 These high temps stop a lot of things but they don't stop trains from moving and they don't stop RailState sensors from working to collect real-time data on those trains. Our sensor in Needles is plugging along, gathering up-to-the-minute data on what's moving on BNSF's Southern Transcon, no matter how hot it gets. Check the link in the comments to see our new Rail Network Snapshot for Needles, CA. #needles #transcon #intermodal #recordheat

Last month, RailState’s sensor network captured information on a couple thousand trains moving through Amarillo, Texas. This is a snapshot of the most common hazardous materials RailState identified on those trains. Despite the public interest, state and municipal agencies have not had access to detailed data about hazardous materials moving through their jurisdictions. This information can help policymakers and officials understand community risks, prepare and train for responses, and act decisively during incidents. With RailState’s rapidly expanding network in the U.S., insights into HAZMAT movements are becoming available for more communities every day. To learn more about how RailState can empower stronger public safety oversight in your community, reach out here.
