Many years ago, I found myself sitting in the office, emotionally fragile and on the verge of tears. It had been a difficult day for me, as I had just returned from attending my grandfather's funeral. The pain of not being able to bid him farewell in person weighed heavily on my heart. I vividly remember the circumstances leading up to that moment. I had been in Taipei, attending a tradeshow when I received the news of my grandfather's passing. Without hesitation, I booked a long, grueling 14-hour flight to Toronto for his funeral. My grandfather had played a significant role in my life, acting as my sole father figure. It was in this vulnerable state that a co-worker said something that pierced through my already fragile emotions. I couldn't hold back any longer, and tears streamed down my face. In a moment of raw honesty, I confided in him about the loss of my grandfather. I could see a shift in his expression, a mixture of surprise and remorse, and he quickly left my office. To my surprise, the next day, I received a bouquet of flowers from this very same co-worker, accompanied by a heartfelt note offering his condolences. It was then that I learned he was going through a difficult divorce of his own. In that moment of snapping at me, he had been battling his own inner turmoil. That experience taught me a powerful lesson about kindness. We never truly know what others are going through behind their smiles or professional facades. Life can throw unexpected challenges and heartaches at anyone, and it is during these times that a little compassion goes a long way. So, I urge you all to be kind, not just on LinkedIn but in every aspect of life. Let us approach others with empathy, understanding that each person carries their own burdens and battles.
