The EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) has recently entered into force and is a game-changer for businesses. It requires large companies to identify and address any negative impacts on human rights and the environment originating in their global value chains. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which came into effect last year, and CSDDD are designed to complement each other. While CSRD focuses on reporting, CSDDD emphasises taking action. Both directives bring special attention to managing supply chains effectively to address environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks, thereby enhancing transparency, accountability and regulatory compliance. Technology can significantly shape organisational risk exposure and appetite—and related mitigation strategies. Although cyber and digital risks rank high in CEE executives' concerns, according to the regional findings of the Global Risk Survey, this doesn't put organisations off investing in AI, machine learning, cybersecurity tools and automation technologies. The survey also shows CEE companies tend to see technology as an opportunity rather than a threat and are willing to take a more tech-powered approach to risk. Perceptions of Central and Eastern Europe are shifting from cost advantage to innovation and business advantage. This is one of the main themes addressed by Tom Kindermans, Managing Director CEE, SAP, when he was interviewed by Mariusz Chudy, Technology Alliances Leader at PwC CEE. The interview also focuses on: 🔸the impact of technological transformations—AI and the Internet of Things 🔸societal changes—transparency, sustainability and freedom of speech 🔸ethical political and monetary stability as factors attracting investors 🔸alliances with educational institutions to enhance the CEE talent pool. Listening to eminent voices in our region is an important part of building our understanding of the future of CEE. It's also the goal of our ‘The Next 20 Years' series as we mark the 20th anniversary since eight CEE nations joined the European Union. For consumers, subscriptions can offer convenience, customisation, and potential cost savings—though attitudes vary by product type. In CEE, many consumers are most open to subscriptions for groceries (35%), health and beauty products (26%), and travel (26%). Sometimes GenAI’s creativity can go too far and result in ‘hallucinations’—outputs that seem plausible but actually have no basis in reality. Why do AI hallucinations occur? The most common reasons include: ▪ vague prompts that lack context ▪ data that is inadequate for producing the requested outputs ▪ training data that taught the model to predict is insufficient for the chosen use cases ▪ tasks that GenAI is not equipped to handle. The risk of hallucinations, however, can be mitigated when applying the Responsible AI framework. The journeys that products take to reach customers often span multiple countries, making supply chains complex and difficult to track. As a result, limited visibility and data collection challenges may expose businesses to unexpected risks—particularly those connected with corporate sustainability requirements. Sustainable supply chains are crucial as they are where up to 90% of a company's sustainability impacts come from. How can retailers and brands in CEE address customers' needs and concerns when it comes to food and dietary decisions? They must balance cost-effectiveness with consumer expectations of value amid rising prices. CEE respondents demonstrate that the cost of products (63%), general health (53%) and food being in season (46%) are their key motivations when making food and dietary choices. The global top three look a bit different to CEE consumer behaviour, with overall health (57%), financial factors (52%) and nutritional information (46%). Cross-sectoral collaboration is fundamental to how we can build a more sustainable future. Working together to find solutions was the heart of an important event jointly hosted this month by PwC Azerbaijan and the United Nations in Azerbaijan—the ESG Summit: Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Development. The summit represented a crucial step towards the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will be held in Baku this November. As well as preparation for COP29, the principal focus of the summit was on integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles through cross-sectoral collaboration to address global climate challenges. We look forward to playing a role in COP29 in and supporting organisations across our region and beyond on their sustainability journeys. We also look forward to further work with the public and private sectors to find practical solutions to conduct business sustainably. #COP29 #FutureofCEE Shaukat Tapia, Simon Carey, Dr. Akif Koca, Agnieszka Rogowiec, Hajar Ibrahimova, MBA, ACCA, Leyla Sadikhova, Günel Sadiyeva, Akbota Askanbay
