My first annual PSI Conference was more than I expected it to be, in all of the right ways. Postpartum Support International brought together over 1200 individuals committed to making an impact in maternal mental health. I received an AMAZING 2 day training on perinatal losss and grief, met some of my Maryland chapter board members, interacted with professionals making significant strides in this field, and overall felt an abundance of love and gratitude. Being in that ballroom on opening day was a feeling I couldn’t even describe. It was beyond powerful to see and hear about people’s stories, their why, and all of the incredible things they are doing. There’s something to be said when a woman experiences a significant challenge or darkness in her life, and creates something beautiful and life changing from that event. Much love to all of the people in this space this weekend, and a special thanks to the amazing trainers who facilitated such impactful sessions. I’m already looking forward to next year, more connections, and another level of change in maternal mental health 💜💜🌸🌸🫶🏻🫶🏻!!!!

It was an honor to accompany 1300 change-makers at the Postpartum International Conference in our nations capital this past weekend. We heard moving stories of lived experience and learned about the national strategy to improve maternal mental health. My optimism was intertwined with grief knowing that there are countless resources available to moms and they still suffer in silence. Every mother deserves safe care during her perinatal and postpartum period. We’ve got a lot of work to do to end our maternal mental health crisis and I will spend the rest of my life committed to this mission. To parents in my network who are suffering, you are never alone. Help is available. #psicon2024 #maternalmentalhealth

We are thrilled to share this latest publication from three of our board members: Co-Chair: Lauren Thompson, MHS, CPD Scholarships Chair: Lindsay Standeven Communications Chair: Nicole Listekow The Relationship between Infant Feeding and Maternal Mental Health in Advances in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. Article: https://lnkd.in/eHqWd-zw Authors: Lauren Thompson, MHS, Nicole Listekow, MD, Milena Smith, MD, PhD, and Lindsay Standeven, MD Postpartum Support International Elsevier Department of Mental Health - Johns Hopkins BSPH
New publication (and my very first) has dropped! The Relationship Between Infant Feeding and Maternal Mental Health, a review and clinical vignette, is published in the latest volume of Advances in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. Our hope is to bring infant feeding information to psychiatrists and mental health providers who may not be aware of its intersections with mental health. There remains a need for integrated, community-based care systems following birth and in the postpartum to support both feeding goals AND the mental health of parents. They do not need to be separate and competing goals! There also remains a need for more research for populations majority excluded - queer families, black parents, people of color, native parents, parents who exclusively express breastmilk, and people with existing mental health conditions. Huge thank you to my mentor, Lindsay Standeven, for guiding the process, my co-authors for all their edits and contributions, and my advisor, Jeanine, who reassured me along the way. Thanks also to our editor, Lauren Osborne.
