Article: Having a great interview! Focus on ability. The first purpose of interviewing is proving you can do the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. You can do this easily with the STAR method! The STAR method is a technique of answering behavioral interview questions by describing a specific situation and/or task, action, and result of the situation in relation to the interview question. It’s great to have at least 5 STARs prepared ahead of time to draw from. When it comes to disclosing your disability – it’s always encouraged. One, it lets the employer know what to expect. Secondly, it gives you the opportunity to ask for accommodations. It’s OK to ask for accommodations! Some common accommodations include having the questions in advance, extra time on exams, and large-print materials. Finally, it gives you the opportunity to weed out employers. You don’t want to work for someone whose not OK with your disability, or isn’t prepared to provide you with accommodations that will help you thrive in the workplace. The second purpose is proving culture fit – and this goes both ways. It might take a while to find an employer where there is a mutual culture fit. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. It’s OK if it isn’t the best fit. Keep interviewing!
