The PCC is grateful to Sen. Ron Wyden, Sen. Mike Crapo, the United States Senate Committee on Finance and lead staffers Marisa Salemme and Conor Sheehey for starting an important conversation about how we can deliver better chronic care. But as lawmakers weigh these important changes, it's essential they place primary care at the center of their efforts.

Dr. Roshni Koli, Chief Medical Officer at the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, adds insight into just how crucial integrated care is in strengthening our nation's primary care system. We are grateful to have the organization as one of our newest members.
"Nearly half of individuals who die by suicide saw a primary care provider within a month of their death, highlighting a critical window of time to identify and help people having suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Every primary care visit is an opportunity to identify suicide risk and potentially save a life." Our CMO, Dr. Christine Yu Moutier co-authored a piece alongside Dr. Roshni Koli of Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute in STAT. Read here:

Sincere thanks to the Senate Finance Committee for its chronic care/Medicare payment reform efforts. I urge Congress to put primary care at the center of that work. Additional thanks to the Primary Care Collaborative for their leadership in crafting our collective response to the Finance Committee's white paper "Bolstering Chronic Care through Physician Payment: Current Challenges and Policy Options.” The future of healthcare in America depends upon payment transformation with better resourcing of our crucial foundation of #primarycare.

We believe Oak Street Health creates more opportunities for seniors to experience better, more convenient access to primary care. A recent JAMA study showed that an increase of 10 primary care physicians for every 100,000 people increased life expectancy of the entire population by nearly two months. While primary care spend is only 5% of total health care spend, it impacts 85% of downstream care and costs. Creating greater access to primary care is one way we can encourage more preventive care that results in better health.

The U.S. consistently fails to invest enough in #PrimaryCare despite clear evidence that increased primary care services lead to healthier lives, lower costs, and better access to care. Policymakers need to invest in high-quality primary care. https://lnkd.in/eYZduPZy
