Yorkshire and the Humber could reach #NetZero in 15 years! 🌍💨 According to a report by the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission, this can be achieved through ‘economically sound’ investments, more than a third of which will pay for themselves, and will benefit not only nature, but also people and the economy. The #OurCarbonStory report is underpinned by research conducted by independent academics including Dr Anne Owen from Leeds. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/egzNv9dX Make sure to follow Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission for updates and progress 🌳👇
Happy #YorkshireDay! Yorkshire & the Humber can reach #NetZero in 15 years, generating billions in co-benefits for people, nature, and the economy – and we already have what we need to do it. The region has an ambitious target to achieve net zero emissions by 2038. While undeniably challenging, our new report says this is doable through economically sound investments, more than a third of which pay for themselves. And, while most reports don’t calculate regional consumption emissions – ours does! These add more than a third to Yorkshire & the Humber’s carbon footprint, with transport and homes the big ones. We break down contributions from meat-eating, hobbies, aviation and more. The good news is, achieving #NetZero in Yorkshire & the Humber on this ambitious timescale is not only technically possible, but it can also unlock at least £250bn in co-benefits by 2050, particularly from health and wellbeing, with big wins for nature. The investments needed are steep - £7.3bn a year to 2038 - which equates to just under 3% of regional GDP; by 2038 this will be compensated for by the value of the energy savings alone. Our short, accessible, illustrated report is essential reading for anyone interested in or involved with pathways to net zero in Yorkshire and the Humber - and beyond. https://lnkd.in/eh6SDqjp

Switching from meat to plant proteins can have a positive impact on the planet by reducing carbon emissions 🍖🌍 Meat alternatives have come a long way over the years, but the School of Food Science and Nutrition are designing the “food of tomorrow” exploring how to further improve the texture of plant proteins. At our launch event, our guests discovered the crucial role of friction (tribology) in our eating experience and its importance to food enjoyment through holding 3D printed tongues and playing friction inspired games at the Feel for Food stall! 👅 This research is looking into how we can 👉 transform unappetising foods 👉 enable fat replacement for healthier options without sacrificing taste and 👉 enhance more sustainable plant protein products to match the mouth-feel of animal proteins Find out more 🥩👇 https://lnkd.in/gFp8SU24

Our newly formed Climate Evidence Unit at the University of Leeds and Priestley Centre for Climate Futures has produced its first report led by the ever persuasive John Barrett OBE, looking at how UK climate targets can be emboldened. I'll be reading and digesting, I'm sure feedback to John and team would be welcome, what else would you like to see the unit look at?
A new report from our Climate Evidence Unit sets out 5️⃣ targets that the incoming Government can adopt to achieve its climate commitments. Target 1⃣: An absolute greenhouse gas emissions target for the UK Target 2⃣: Greenhouse gas removals for post-2050 climate balancing Target 3⃣: Smooth transition target to net zero Target 4⃣: Energy demand reduction target Target 5⃣: A fossil fuel reduction target Professor John Barrett OBE explains each target in this video. Glaciers serve as a water resource for hundreds of millions of people, but climate change is causing them to retreat at unprecedented rates. Ice Club, a network of early career researchers from water@leeds, shared their work on glaciers at our launch event using virtual reality (VR). Our guests followed the journey of a single snowflake as it 👇 ❄️ Fell on the summit of Everest 🏔️ Worked its way through the Khumbu glacier and 💧 Into the rivers that provide drinking water for the towns of the lower Himalaya From the top to the tap! Find out more about Ice Club, who are devoting their careers to understanding the drivers and impacts of change in the cryosphere (the world’s coldest regions) and finding solutions to these issues 👇 https://lnkd.in/ekhGbUPH
