We’re thrilled to announce we’ve released Shiny for Python v1.0! 🎉 Not only does this release include several exciting features and significant improvements, but it’s also the release we’re choosing to call Shiny for Python v1.0! In the blog post sharing about this release, we cover: 🏷️ What does it mean to hit v1.0? – For the Shiny team, bestowing the “v1.0” label on a piece of software is a declaration of a certain level of quality, feature completeness, and API stability. 🤖 New Chat() component – The new Chat() component makes it easy to implement generative AI chatbots, powered by any LLM of your choosing. 🔍 End-to-end testing – After over a year of development and internal testing, we’re now exporting an end-to-end testing framework for Shiny apps. End-to-end tests are a great way to maintain code quality by ensuring that apps behave as expected in response to (simulated) user interactions in a real browser. Our approach builds on the fabulous Playwright framework, which provides a fast, powerful, and resilient foundation for browser-based testing. 📊 Data frame improvements – Shiny provides two components for rendering data frames: DataGrid() and DataTable(). The former is a more interactive and feature-rich table, while the latter is a simpler, more lightweight table. We’ve made improvements in this release related to styling, selection and editing, Polars and typing support, and control over sorting and filtering. 🎥 Multimedia components – Our assistant app takes webcam video as input, and plays audio as output. To make this a nice polished experience, we created a pair of Shiny-enabled web components to serve as input/output. 📦 Modules for Express – Shiny Express now has support for using Shiny modules, and you can even create Shiny modules using Express syntax. 🎨 Use Bootswatch themes with shinyswatch – We’re also happy to announce the release of shinyswatch v0.7.0. shinyswatch brings Bootswatch themes to Shiny for Python, allowing you to customize the appearance of your Shiny apps with a variety of themes. Check out the keynotes lined up for Posit Conf 2024 With 4 keynote sessions, 26 all-day workshops, 24 breakout sessions, numerous networking events, and all-day lounge access with scheduled demos and time with the Posit team + partners, you won't want to miss Posit Conf. Learn more & register at http://posit.co/conference ⬡ Data Wrangling [for Python or R] Like a Boss With DuckDB with Hannes Mühleisen, CEO, DuckDB Labs. Data wrangling is a challenging process often filled with inefficiencies and ad-hoc solutions, but DuckDB aims to streamline this by integrating advanced data management techniques into an accessible, zero-dependency package for R and Python, featuring top-notch CSV reading, Parquet file and Arrow structure support, and efficient query processing and updates. ⬡ A future of data science, with Allen Downey, Principal Data Scientist, PyMC Labs. In the data science hype cycle, we have moved from the "peak of inflated expectations" in 2012 through the "trough of disillusionment" in 2016, and are now nearing the "plateau of productivity," making it an ideal time to evaluate our progress, the effectiveness of our tools and processes, and the future direction of data science. ⬡ Practical Tips for using Generative AI in Data Science Workflows, with Melissa Van Bussel, Senior Data Analyst, Statistics Canada Now that we're a couple of years into the age of Generative AI, it's clear that this technology has the power to transform the way that we work. As Generative AI continues to evolve, the ways that we use these models should evolve, too. In this talk, we'll explore how we as data professionals can maximize the benefits of these tools in 2024, and how they can be incorporated into our everyday workflows. We'll also look at creative use cases that might not seem immediately obvious, but that will allow us to combine Generative AI with other data science tools that we already know and love, like Quarto and Shiny. Melissa Van Bussel ⬡ Updates from Posit, with Hadley Wickham Please join us for our first Posit keynote, where we’ll tell you about our mission, our products, and some of the exciting things we’ve been working on over the last year. Hadley Wickham, Chief Scientist, will talk briefly about Posit’s mission and products, before introducing the three speakers who will update you on some of the coolest projects we’ve worked on over the last year. James Blair, Senior Product Manager, will give you the latest on our partnerships with Databricks and Snowflake, and how we’re building seamless integrations that let you focus on data science instead of dealing with technical details. Charlotte Wickham, Developer Educator, will show you what’s new in Quarto, focusing on new ways to build beautiful PDFs with Typst. Finally, George Stagg, Senior Software Engineer, will tell you about the latest innovations in teaching using webR, a tool that lets you compile your R code into standalone HTML files.

The Plotnine Plotting Contest deadline is July 26th. It's not too late to get artsy with Python! One of my favorite uses of plotting libraries --- by folks like Thomas Lin Pedersen, Nicola Rennie, and Yan Holtz --- is plotting generative art. Creating generative art often combines randomness with interesting mathematical algorithms. I tried my hand at reproducing one from Yan's Graph Gallery in plotnine, and was surprised it was up for the task ✨ * Post on creating plot: https://lnkd.in/edKvy59s * Plotnine Contest: https://lnkd.in/ea8KDC6Q

    • A plotnine plot, using randomly generated data, and geom_area(), to show bars of differing heights and colors. The heights and colors are determined randomly.
