Can you help save my wife, Laura’s life? I’ve never posted anything of a personal nature on LinkedIn, but I’m now making an exception. In late August, my wife, Laura, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive liver cancer (Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma, which is a bile duct cancer). She has been undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy since September 2023 and has tolerated the treatment well, and recently some of the tumors have shrunk. However, in her case the cancer is inoperable for a resection due to the number, location and size of tumors within her liver. We have sought alternative treatments and learned that back in our hometown of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is at the forefront of performing Live Liver Transplants and have agreed to further evaluate her as a liver transplant candidate. UPMC has a very high success rate with these surgeries, and this is the best chance she has for a cure. Not all hospitals will transplant patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. University of Pittsburgh is a center of excellence for living donor transplants who will transplant her cancer. Amazingly, the liver of a living donor will grow back to original size in about 8-10 weeks! Our next step is an extensive evaluation with further testing within the next few weeks, so we are beginning our search for a potential donor now. We are racing against the clock, so timing is critical. They encouraged us to be proactive in finding a living donor as time is not on our side with her cancer. We know this is a huge ask, but would anyone be interested in learning more about being her living donor? Simply put, we need someone soon who is a match and is willing to donate a piece of his or her liver to save Laura’s life. Our health insurance will pay for the donor's evaluation, surgery and after care. Some of the qualifications to be Laura’s liver donor are below: O positive or O negative blood Between the ages of 18 and 59 Good general health and no history of cancer, liver disease, diabetes or heart disease.
