About us

Pivot is a non-governmental organization that combines accessible and comprehensive health care services with rigorous scientific research to support the existing public health system in rural Madagascar. Eleven hours from the country's capital by car, Pivot works in Ifanadiana District, adjacent to Ranomafana National Park. The district has a population of over 200,000 people, more than 75% of whom live in extreme poverty. Pivot aims to create a district-level health system that can serve as a replicable model for the rest of Madagascar, and produce lessons in health systems strengthening for peer implementers worldwide. Pivot partners closely with the Madagascar Ministry of Health (MoH) to strengthen Ifanadiana's district hospital, 20 health centers, and community health programs. Pivot conducts research of interest to the MoH that informs health programs and produces lessons for the replicating and scaling-up of the model district. Pivot's data platform is central to adapting, improving, and scaling our model. Our team is currently comprised of 245 staff on the ground, over 97% of whom are Malagasy, and a 4-person US-based support team. In addition to the MoH, some of PIVOT's key mission partners include Centre ValBio, Partners In Health, and Harvard Medical School.

It’s the last day of World Health Worker Week! Today we hear from Sandra, Community Health Worker: “As CHWs, we have a huge responsibility - our country's development starts at the grassroots level. We are charged with informing the public of health threats and prevention measures through comprehensive health awareness campaigns, the impact of which we are able to see as mortality rates decline. I have been a CHW for 3 years, and love my profession because I like to see children get healthy and to support women through their pregnancies. We must do our job well - the health of our country depends on it.” Thank you for following along this #WHWWeek to hear directly from those to hear from those whose daily work is vital to the wellbeing of communities across Madagascar. It’s World Health Worker Week! Today we hear from Mariette, Community Health Worker: “As CHWs, we are really community educators. Being closest to the communities we serve and often the first ones informed of a sick patient, we must not hesitate to advise the community in order to gain their trust and respect as we guide them to care. We transmit key health information and guidance to the community to prevent the disease. I have been a CHW for 25 years, and I love this profession because I am able to put the knowledge I have toward the benefit of the family and the community; in return, the work increases my knowledge every day.” Pivot invests in #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers because we know that they are the key to achieving global health targets, ensuring health system resilience, and providing lifesaving services around the world. It’s World Health Worker Week! Today we hear from Hantsoa, Malnutrition Manager: “In my role, I primarily care for children, which involves educating parents about how to uphold their family’s health. Patients entrust us with their care, and I am committed to seeking solutions to their issues without limitations. Our approach emphasizes humanized care, which sometimes means answering a call off hours; sometimes it means taking a break to make sure we are at our best to continue our work. It’s a dream come true for me to work in the healthcare field and provide lifesaving services each and every day.” Pivot invests in #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers because we know that they are the key to achieving global health targets, ensuring health system resilience, and providing lifesaving services around the world. It’s World Health Worker Week! Today we hear from Eugénie, Community Health Worker: “I have been a CHW for 26 years. I love my job because I get to use my skills to do good for the people around me. CHWs are role models in the community who provide essential guidance in case of illness, often to patients who might otherwise never engage with the public health system. We are ambassadors for the Ministry of Public Health - someone the community trusts. We are the ones relied upon to convince sick patients that the health system is safe, even when that requires accompanying them all the way to care.” Pivot invests in #SafeSupportedHealthWorkers because we know that they are the key to achieving global health targets, ensuring health system resilience, and providing lifesaving services around the world. 📷 Profiles in Global Health #4 - "Why do millions of people still die of preventable and treatable illnesses?" In this photo interview series I highlight some of the team mates I draw inspiration from at Community Health Impact Coalition. I hope this gives you an insight into who they are & what inspires them to work in global health. Enjoy. ------ Name: Laura Cordier Organisation: Pivot Works, Inc. What inspires you to work in Global Health? "This is a question that drives me everyday: Why do millions of people still die of preventable and treatable illnesses? I am passionate about trying to move that needle - from a child having access to life saving routine vaccination to a mother being able to safely deliver in a dignified space. Until then, we have work to do." Who has been the biggest influence to date in your career? "Paul Farmer has had a remarkable influence on my career. His vision always spoke to me, which is why when Pivot was created as a mission organization to Partners In Health, I jumped at the opportunity to join the team. I was able to align my data science skillset to an area of work I was passionate about." One book or article you would recommend to anyone interested in learning more about global health? "Mountains beyond Moutains" by Paul Farmer. Fun fact : I applied for my master's degree at the London School of Hygiene and Public Health a week after reading that book." One bit of advice you would give to someone interested in working in global health? "You need to enter the space with the absolute humility that you do not have all the answers and that you need to create space to learn and to do the work with the community that you are serving - but not just on paper, with actual, candid and radical intention. Someone interested in global health today needs to be ready to shape the future of global health." What do you enjoy about working with Community Health Impact Coalition? "CHIC is aiming to change the status quo of global health - especially around community health workers. It's an honor to be on that journey."
