Building a more beautiful and bountiful city for all!

About us

POP works with community-based groups and volunteers to plan and plant orchards filled with useful and edible plants. POP provides orchard design assistance, plant materials, and training in orchard care. Community organizations own, maintain, and harvest the orchards, expanding community-based food production, environmental benefits, and opportunities for nature education. Orchards are planted in formerly vacant lots, community gardens, schoolyards, and other spaces, almost exclusively in low-wealth neighborhoods where people lack access to fresh fruit.

  • A local reporter visited us at the Learning Orchard earlier this month for the BBC World Service show "People Fixing the World," on a segment called Greener Ways to Feed the World. The first half of the episode focuses on lab-grown meat; the segment featuring urban orchards and food forests - and POP! - starts at the 15 minute mark. Take a listen to hear Phil, Sharon, and Lead Orchard Volunteers Roman, Tamir, Anisa, and Nafeesah! https://lnkd.in/guT2RNjz

  • What’s going on with the Land Bank? Hopefully, positive change- take a look in the Inquirer article shared below.

Great to see attention being brought on the Land Bank. Since last spring, Philadelphia Orchard Project has been part of an informal coalition advocating for reform of this agency and a reaffirmation of the premise that urban agriculture is a viable and positive long term use for land. Protecting and preserving green space *for community use* must be balanced with the need for land for affordable housing: these needs (and the groups advocating for these things) should not be pitted up against each other. https://lnkd.in/eEvV2avz

After a controversial first decade, what challenges does the Philly Land Bank face now? Five advocates offer advice.

The City opened an application for Park/Water Projects Technician, which is a position that Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) hires for a variety of jobs including inspector positions in our Street Tree Office, and field positions on our Natural Lands Team. This application is only open until 2/16/24. PPR may be hiring staff from this list during the 2024 calendar year. https://lnkd.in/e5jM_7Sz This is a civil service job and has a different hiring process than folks might be used to. Here are the steps: - Applicants apply for a position that may be available at many different City departments - If an applicant meets the requirements they are invited to take an exam to determine their skill level - Applicants who pass the test receive a score and are added to a hiring list that goes in order of the score they received on the test - When a position opens in a Department the applicants at the top of the list are invited for an interview - Applicants who do well in an interview are offered a job The City only posts opportunities to take this exam every few years, so if you don't want this job now but might in the future, you should still apply!

  • Every fall, POP asks our orchard partners to reflect on the season, to share stories with us about what the orchard provides for their community, and to let us know what they grew and harvested. We also learn what challenges they faced, which helps us plan for upcoming educational programs and training efforts. Stories from partners typically highlighting the joy of sharing fruit and knowledge about orchard plants and their harvests, and the ways that growing and sharing fruit allows them to connect with neighbors. On behalf of the Philadelphia Orchard Project (a community partner of Big Picture Alliance aka BPA), we hope you'll join us at Fund Film Futures, a fundraising gala to support Big Picture Alliance's youth filmmaking programs across Philadelphia - Thursday Nov 30, 7pm @World Cafe Live! GET TICKETS or DONATE today at https://lnkd.in/gw4hDQUJ. Over the past year, POP has been working with BPA's youth and professional film-makers on a series of projects: 3 partner stories (featured in this spring's Big Picture Film Fest - Bloom Where You Are Planted); an updated "POP intro" video, and new pest & disease videos explaining some of the most common challenges faced by urban orchardists. We're so excited to be sharing the latter two soon! The partner stories can be seen on POP's YouTube channel here: https://lnkd.in/gitS4zNa Throughout the process of engaging on this work together, we have been impressed by BPA's collaborative spirit, creativity, and youth programs. They connect youth eager to learn about film-making with caring and talented mentors and teachers, and have helped us better tell our own story through their talents.   The Fund Film Futures event brings together BPA’s diverse network of community members, industry partners and civic leaders to celebrate the work of our young filmmakers and ensure ALL Philly youth have access to digital media education and career pathways. The evening includes a mixer with food, music and silent auction, followed by a screening and awards presentation honoring special guests. All proceeds directly support BPA’s pathway of school, summer, and workforce programs providing hundreds of Philly youth access to digital media tools, creative community and professional mentorship – empowering them to define their own narrative from script-to-screen and from curiosity-to-careers. Thanks to BPA's event sponsors Loaded Pixel Maestro Filmworks ChatterBlast Media Seven Knots Film & Media All Ages Productions and Reliance Standard Life Event teaser video is shared below, and link to register or donate is in the comments!
