The 2023 SPLC Special Initiative Award went to University of Pennsylvania for its Catering@Penn initiative. Penn Procurement Services and Penn Sustainability enabled the Penn buying community to make informed decisions about catering services by building an interactive website, backed by a platform of diverse, sustainable caterers. This platform has been invaluable to Penn’s decentralized buyers and event planners who are making daily catering decisions. The Catering@Penn initiative is also contributing to culture change and a shift to more sustainable food choices. Penn's Power Purchase Agreement in action! The 1,600 acres of solar panels are operational as of December 2023, representing the largest solar power project in Pennsylvania, and bringing University of Pennsylvania that much closer to it's goal of carbon neutrality by 2042.

We are pleased to present the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan 3.0 FY2023 Annual Report, which documents progress towards the University of Pennsylvania's climate goals and net-zero emissions by 2042. Some highlights from an active year of climate action below ⤵ 📉 In FY23, Penn reduced net emissions by 46% as compared to the 2009 baseline year.  🎒 4,886 students enrolled in environment-related courses in the 2022-2023 academic year.  🛫 In its second year of operation, Penn collected $191,454 through its Climate Impact Offset charge and will offset the 53,732,321 domestic and international miles flown in FY23 🏫 To date, there are 49 LEED certified projects at Penn, with an additional 8 under construction & 6 in design. 🚲 During FY23, 101,130 Indego bike trips started and ended at six locations on or around campus. #sustainability #climateaction

The Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and Perry World House led a delegation of more than two dozen Penn people at COP28, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Dubai. University of Pennsylvania professors are sharing their expertise at COP28 - tackling climate issues like loss and damage, extreme heat, green finance, food waste, the role of cities, and the need to transition energy systems from fossil fuels to clean and sustainable technologies. Zeke Emanuel, vice provost for global initiatives, is leading a joint event with the World Health Organization, titled “Answering an Urgent Call: The Role of Higher Education in Tackling Climate Change,” looking at how universities can play their part in addressing the climate crisis. We can't wait for the fruits of this discussion, and more.
