We joined members of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe and South Texas Environmental Justice Network for an in-person meeting with private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners to discuss the firm’s backing of the dangerous Rio Grande LNG terminal in South Texas. Our newest report explains the corporate pillaging that led Steward Health Care to declare bankruptcy in May 2024. The report details how private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, aided by hospital landlord Medical Properties Trust, extracted significant profits from a struggling health system even as the system financially struggled. The Supreme Court has axed the Chevron doctrine. This sounds boring and wonky, but the ruling has massive ramifications for health care. Creating rules for Medicare, Medicaid, and drugs is extremely difficult. The people working at HHS, CMS, and FDA had a lot of latitude, under Chevron, to make those rules because they are considered to be the experts on how things should work when there is ambiguity. Now, the administrative state is ceding power to the courts. Expect more industry lawsuits when the government dares to touch their taxpayer-funded revenue. Despite the compelling arguments and urgent pleas from the tribe, community members, and PESP, GIP refused to commit to canceling the Rio Grande LNG terminal during the meeting. Learn more:
