Clean energy is Nigeria’s next leapfrog opportunity 🚀 I recently had the privilege of presenting at the annual Global Startups Conference in Toronto. I spoke about “Financing a sustainable Africa for tomorrow”. WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT? Every action, from cooking a meal to traveling, contributes to your carbon footprint, impacting our environment. Whether it's your daily commute, food choices, or shopping habits - they all matter. The larger your footprint, the greater the strain on our planet. YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT A lot of hot air! Let's dive into the numbers! On average, each person globally generates 4.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide yearly. Understanding where this stems from is crucial. Numerous daily habits and lifestyle decisions shape our individual footprints significantly. Here are five major contributors: 1. Family Size:The number of children you have plays a significant role in your carbon footprint, with each child adding an average of 58 tons of CO2-equivalent annually. 2. Transportation: Cars and planes are major contributors. Owning and driving a car regularly adds 2.4 tons of CO2-equivalent yearly, while a single transatlantic flight contributes 1.6 tons. 3. Heating and Cooling: Regularly heating and cooling your home adds around 1.5 tons of CO2-equivalent annually. Consider cleaner energy sources like solar to reduce this impact. 4. Food Choices: Eating meat adds about 0.8 tons to your annual carbon footprint. This has less to do with emissions produced directly by the animals themselves and more to do with the energy required to grow and harvest the crops that feed the livestock. But not all meats are created equal: Beef requires a lot more feed, water and land than chicken, and therefore accounts for an additional 880 pounds of CO2-e emitted per year. 5. Laundry:Simply washing and drying clothes contributes about 0.46 tons of CO2 annually. PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD To reduce your environmental impact, start by measuring your current carbon footprint.
