About us
The Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP) is a nonprofit organization that empowers people to decide together how to spend public money, primarily in the US and Canada. We create and support participatory budgeting processes that deepen democracy, build stronger communities, and make public budgets more equitable and effective. Building on decades of experience around the world, we understand participatory budgeting (PB) as a democratic process in which local people directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. We approach our work in three main ways: WE BUILD REAL POWER OVER REAL MONEY We develop processes that let people make real decisions, moving beyond consultation. We facilitate grassroots democratic decision-making over: - The design of the budgeting process - What proposals go on the ballot - What gets funded WE TRANSFORM DEMOCRACY We work to rebuild the relationship between government and the people. We change how government works and how people can engage in democracy, by crafting processes that: - Build individuals’ skills and knowledge, to develop new community leaders - Bring neighbors together across divides, to build stronger communities - Connect residents, experts, and officials, to make better decisions together WE ADDRESS INEQUALITY We recognize that many people face obstacles to participating in government, and we work to ensure that everyone has an equal voice, regardless of age, race, financial resources, or other issues. To level the playing field of participation and make public budgets work for everyone, we: - Prioritize engaging underrepresented groups, such as youth, people of color, and low-income people - Partner with local organizations that are already engaging marginalized communities - Provide people with the tools to make fair and equitable spending decisions

“Instead of asking them to participate in the budgeting process, I asked them if they wanted a say in how their school was spending its funds.” PB champion and Family and Community Engagement Manager Cyndi Tercero-Sandoval is using #ParticipatoryBudgeting to give students the power to decide what the Phoenix Union High School District spends a portion of its $$$ on towards school safety. "True repair for Black people requires: (1) resources, and by resources, I mean land and money; (2) equitable policies and programs in areas such as wealth-building, education, housing, environment, health, employment, the criminal legal system, and democracy; and (3) an end to anti-Blackness in future governmental policies and practices." In this Nonprofit Quarterly + The Movement for Black Lives piece, Temi F. Bennett, Esq. of iF, A Foundation for Radical Possibility talks about #reparativephilanthropy, the shifting landscape, and the foundation's local reparations work in Washington DC. #ParticipatoryDemocracy plays a key role in ending anti-Blackness in governmental policies and practices by challenging us to build a system of governance that is rooted in radically reimagining how we relate to the policies and practices that shape our lives. This requires a reckoning with the deep roots of #structuralracism and how white supremacy shapes our current models of top down decision-making. ⭐Find out more about the foundation's groundbreaking work in acknowledging, addressing, and daring to repaid legacies of harm at https://www.iffdn.org/ Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gEHVDQWB

"In truth, both multi-generational wealth and poverty depend on a byzantine system of laws and policies that favor the status quo—and uphold centuries of racial discrimination." In this piece, Shanelle Matthews, Communications Director for The Movement for Black Lives, exposes the false myth of US meritocracy and lays out how Black people have been both historically excluded from social safety programs and denigrated when they gained access. #SocialSecurity #TANF She explains how we can and must stop these harmful narratives and move towards #economicjustice + a real safety net for Black Americans. This includes workers’ rights, investment in Black finance, and #communitycontrol of resources! #ParticipatoryBudgeting #democracy This article is part of a 🔥 Nonprofit Quarterly + The Movement for Black Lives series about the intersection of racial and economic justice. "Ultimately, centering the needs of tenants and backing tenants’ rights organizations is the way to ensure that progress is driven by and beneficial for a community-based #housingjustice movement—not just for individuals or a professional service class. This work requires constant engagement, organizing, and advocacy that centers the needs of directly impacted people, and celebrates wins—no matter how small they may seem." Housing justice is a key part of a multifaceted movement for #economicjustice and #Blackliberation. In this Nonprofit Quarterly piece, Dr. Amara Enyia, JD, PhD of The Movement for Black Lives details the housing affordability crisis, how #Black people are hit the hardest, and how to organize with tenants to stop #discrimination and #gentrification. Black-led advocates are pushing for interventions like tenants' bill of rights legislation, rental assistance programs, and community land trusts in order to ensure that #housingisahumanright.
