Dr. Mark Mabus, chief medical informatics officer and vice president of electronic health records at Parkview Health, recently received the Physicians Advisory Council PACademy Award from Epic.   Epic is the nation’s leading electronic health records system provider, in use in more than one third of acute care hospitals nationally and accounting for slightly over half of all hospital beds. Parkview has used the Epic system since 2012.   Mabus was recognized for his ongoing contributions to the community of more than 400,000 physicians utilizing Epic as their medical system. Mabus serves as a member of the Epic Physician Advisory Council Advisory Board, which shapes educational content for Epic providers; has created widely acclaimed educational content on how providers can reduce “note bloat”; has contributed tools, presentations and materials for use on Epic’s website, webinars, conferences and health system meetings; and leads Parkview in testing and implementation of new Epic features to prepare for deployment to the wider global healthcare network.   “Dr. Mabus is a true bridge between Parkview’s medical providers who are experts in caring for patients and our information systems team members who are experts in technology,” said Ron Double, chief information officer, Parkview Health. “Mark speaks both languages fluently and is invaluable in understanding the needs of our providers and finding and integrating the right tech solutions to support them in caring for our patients.”   Mabus is an active contributor on the Epic UserWeb, an online user forum for health systems that use Epic as their EHR. He regularly answers questions or shares tips for other providers nationally who have questions or are seeking input about features within Epic. He also uses the forum to solicit opinions and ideas from other health systems on how they handle problems that arise within their EHR.   In 2019, he also helped develop and launch an immunization reminder system within Parkview’s Epic system that resulted in more than 75,000 immunizations being provided year-over-year and was promoted nationally by Epic as an example to other health systems.   Mabus was also named one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s “CMIOs to Know” in 2023 for his ongoing contributions to the advancement of health technology.

Parkview Health was selected as the No. 3 nonprofit organization and No. 18 overall on the 2024 North American Inspiring Workplaces Top 100 list.   It’s the first time Parkview has made the International Inspiring Workplaces Group (IW) list, which recognizes and helps shape forward-thinking organizations that put their people first.   Parkview ranked within the top quintile on the 2024 list of companies and was selected as the No. 3 best nonprofit organization. Parkview was also honored as one of seven organizations recognized for superior effort in inspiring well-being among its workforce.   “Parkview’s culture is inspiring, and it’s because of the dedication and hard work of our more than 16,000 co-workers,” said Dena Jacquay, chief administrative officer, Parkview Health. “Parkview invests in our co-workers to inspire their professional growth, support their physical and mental well-being and recognize their tremendous value to providing excellent care experiences for those we serve.”   “We’ve grown and fostered a culture of openness and innovation where our providers and co-workers are encouraged to bring forth new ideas to continue to improve the quality, safety and value of care for our patients,” said Dr. Ray Dusman, president, physician and clinical enterprise, Parkview Health. “Our co-workers know their roles best and their commitment to service and excellence helps drive advancements that make Parkview better every day.”   To ensure that the best-performing organizations were identified, Inspiring Workplaces upgraded the judging criteria for the 2024 awards. Unlike other awards, which rely on surveys, entrants to the Inspiring Workplace Awards were asked to provide proof of their investment in people by completing the entry form consisting of the six key elements IW believes are fundamental to creating a People First workplace: culture and purpose, leadership, wellbeing, inclusion, employee voice and employee experience.   “Parkview Health's submission effectively showcases the organization's unwavering dedication to creating an exceptional employee experience characterized by comprehensive support, responsive leadership, a strong sense of belonging, and a genuine commitment to co-worker well-being,” Inspiring Workplaces judges wrote. “The alignment between the company's purpose and its people practices, coupled with impressive measurable outcomes, sets Parkview apart as an inspiring workplace that truly values and invests in its people.”   Inspiring Workplaces is the latest in a series of workplace accolades Parkview Health has received within the last year, including a Most Loved Workplace by both the Best Practices Institute and Newsweek in 2023 and a Best-in-State Employer by Forbes.   View Parkview Health’s Inspiring Workplaces profile here: https://bit.ly/3Wcos4G   (Pictured: Parkview Health Human Resources Manager Bruce Buttermore represented the health system at the 2024 Inspiring Workplaces Awards Ceremony, held in Chicago.)

Parkview Health recently received magna cum laude status within Epic’s Honor Roll Good Maintenance Grant Program, which recognizes healthcare organizations for effective implementation and use of Epic’s electronic health records (EHR) system.   Epic is the nation’s leading EHR provider. It is used in more than one-third of acute care hospitals and accounts for slightly over half of all hospital beds. Parkview has used the Epic system since 2012.   Parkview is one of only seven health systems to achieve magna cum laude status, the second-highest honor awarded by Epic, while only one organization has achieved the highest summa cum laude status for the current version. The award puts Parkview at the top of the class among more than 500 worldwide healthcare organizations eligible for the Epic Honor Roll program.   Parkview has now made the Epic Honor Roll four times, one of only 64 health systems to be recognized four times or more. Achieving magna cum laude status also qualifies Parkview for additional discounts, helping to reduce the overall cost of care for patients.   “Technology has become an integral part of the healthcare experience, both for providers and patients,” said Ron Double, chief information officer, Parkview Health. “Our Epic system allows Parkview’s co-workers and providers to deliver efficient and effective care, reduce costs for patients and analyze data to make continual improvements across our hospitals and physician offices. Being recognized as a magna cum laude organization by Epic shows that Parkview is maximizing its technology to best serve the community.”   Epic scores organizations based on nine categories, including ease of use for nurses and providers; enterprise data and analytics; financial functions; health information exchange; infrastructure stability and performance; patient experience; population health; and staying current with new Epic features.   Parkview scored within the top 99th percentile for its patient experience and self-help applications, while also scoring above the 90th percentile for patient access and population health management. Parkview utilizes Epic’s MyChart patient portal, giving patients the ability to schedule appointments, message providers, review test results and visit notes, and manage insurance and billing.   "Epic gives physicians the information and tools to elevate the care we provide and gives patients the ability to control their medical information and access the services they need,” said Dr. Mark Pierce, senior vice president and chief medical information officer, Parkview Health.

Parkview Health Nutrition Services was recently awarded the Ball State University Dr. William Bock Outstanding External Organization Award for its dietetic internship program. The annual award is given by the Ball State Department of Nutrition and Health Science and recognizes Indiana companies or organizations that provide exceptional learning experiences to its students. “Parkview is proud to be able to host interns from Ball State and other universities in our nutrition department and provide real-world experience for students in our kitchens, cafeterias and inpatient units,” said Trisha Burgess, nutritional dietitian manager, Parkview Health. “Our dietitians are able to share their skills and knowledge with these up-and-coming students, while our interns provide fresh ideas, insight and support to our team. It’s a pleasure to host our interns and we’re thankful for the recognition from Ball State.” Parkview’s dietetic internship program started in 2017 and hosts college interns from Indiana and Ohio universities. Students work a full-time schedule and receive mentorship from Parkview dietitians during their multi-month internship. Interns get experience working in hospital food service departments as well as doing clinical rotations with dietitians consulting with physicians and ensuring patients’ nutritional needs are met. During the program, interns get experience designing healthy menus, learning about budgeting and ordering, and ensuring proper sanitation and food safety. Interns also have opportunities to collaborate with physicians and nurses to design and execute nutrition plans for patients at Parkview hospitals. Parkview is hosting its largest internship class yet in 2024, with seven students participating in the learning opportunity. The dietetic internship is one of several learning opportunities Parkview offers to students. In 2022, Parkview launched a graduate medical education program for resident physicians, and Parkview continues to provide clinical nursing opportunities through partnerships with area colleges. The health system also hosts robust summer internship programs. “Parkview’s education programs are an important piece of the talent pipeline we’ve built and continue to expand,” said Hallie Custer, vice president of human resources, Parkview Health. “The high-quality learning experiences we provide help ensure the next generation of healthcare workers has the knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce. We hope that, after school, they choose Parkview as the first stop in their healthcare career.” To read more about learning experiences at Parkview, visit https://lnkd.in/e-ZxHZWa learning-opportunities #internship #internships #internshipopportunity #nutrition

Thirty-eight resident physicians were welcomed to Parkview on Friday with a white coat ceremony marking the start of their residency with Parkview Health Graduate Medical Education. It’s the third class to make the transition from student to physician through the program, which again grew with the addition of two programs: obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). Parkview Health Graduate Medical Education now includes five program tracks, including internal medicine, general surgery, transitional year, OB/GYN and PM&R. Since launching in 2022, the program has inducted 87 total resident physicians. “We’re proud to be able to continue to grow the opportunities available to resident physicians in the state of Indiana and in northwest Ohio,” said Dr. Susan Steffy, chief medical officer and designated institutional official, Parkview Health Graduate Medical Education. “Throughout our five programs, these first-year doctors will continue to learn and grow alongside Parkview’s team of experienced clinicians.” The inaugural class of five OB/GYN residents was presented with their white coats at the ceremony, beginning their four-year commitment to the program. Additionally, 15 internal medicine residents began a three-year residency, and four general surgery residents began a six-year commitment. This year also welcomes 12 physicians into the transitional year program. The one-year program serves as a prerequisite for advanced medical residencies, including PM&R. The PM&R program will welcome two resident physicians to the three-year program later this month. “As Parkview Graduate Medical Education enters its third year, we continue to build and grow programs that will impact our entire state and our region for generations to come,” said Dr. Ray Dusman, president, Physician and Clinical Enterprise, Parkview Health. “We are building a pipeline of talent to the region, while also enhancing our physician recruitment efforts and creating greater access to care. It’s easy to see both the economic and health benefits for the community.” #graduatemedicaleducation #residency #medicalresident #residentphysician

Meet Dr. Alan M. Yahanda, who was recently named president of the Parkview Packnett Family Cancer Institute (PFCI). He’s spent his career focused on surgical oncology and now he’s bringing his skills and leadership to Parkview Health. Yahanda had planned on becoming a doctor for nearly as long as he can remember. “It was always something I wanted to do, even back in first grade,” he says. “I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. I was always good with my hands. I liked taking things apart and putting them back together. From then on all my schooling and training took me further in that direction– it felt natural to me.” In his new position, Yahanda is looking forward to continuing and expanding Parkview’s legacy of providing “outstanding, cutting edge cancer care” and maintaining its relationship with the people of northeast Indiana. The PFCI is described as a “one-stop shop for everything outpatient” when it comes to cancer care, offering everything from diagnostics to chemotherapy and even a wig boutique. They offer specialized care and are dedicated to the comfort and health of the patients, offering the only gynecological and palliative oncologists in the area along with eight other tumor site-specific care teams to assure that patients get the most expert and advanced cancer care. The Institute is well known for its outpatient infusion clinic, which provides chemotherapy and hydration infusions as well as blood transfusions with comfort and privacy for patients and their families. “I’m excited to pursue new innovations in technology and treatment, and expand the availability of clinical trials for our patients,” he says. “I also want the PFCI to continue to be a valued partner in the Fort Wayne community, not just in taking care of cancer patients, but also ensuring the health of the community as a whole through prevention and education.” Read more here:
