This past May, Ora was honored to co-present the Dry Horizons Symposium with the Ophthalmology Innovation Summit, an event that highlights the expertise of professionals working to study and treat Dry Eye within ophthalmology. Through a series of panels and presentations, invaluable insight was given pertaining to Dry Eye causes, symptoms, and current available treatments. Symposium-goers were able to hear the personal stories of multiple patients, and no one truly knows the impact of Dry Eye Disease better than those who must endure it every day. Dry Eye patient Ruth Machin shines light on the severity of Dry Eye Disease and the pain and discomfort it causes to millions of people worldwide. As Machin puts it, Dry Eye is not simply a minor and mild condition like many people believe. The summer months can exacerbate dry eye symptoms due to factors like increased screen time, air conditioning, and outdoor activities. The 20-20-20 rule is a simple yet effective exercise to implement when using technology: every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break to view something 20 feet away. As Glaucoma Awareness week drew to a close yesterday here in the UK, our Chief Medical Officer Gustavo De Moraes, MD, PhD, MPH and Medical Director Europe Doina Gherghel, MD PhD EMBA was in London attending the ICORG 2024 Alumni Meeting at Western Eye Hospital, part of our partners the North West London Alliance. Gus passionately states, "Despite major developments in diagnostics and treatment, glaucoma remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. This can only be changed through training of eye care providers, wider access to diagnostic imaging modalities, safer and more effective surgical options, and neuroprotective therapies. Ora is actively working in all these areas. Very few companies and organizations can make that claim, and we are optimistic about reversing the current scenario of the glaucoma burden worldwide." Today, on Juneteenth, Ora's US team pauses to commemorate an important moment in US history. On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, a group of approximately 250,000 African Americans in Galveston, Texas were the last to be finally granted their freedom in the Confederate South. While our American team takes the day to reflect, we honor and understand the historical significance of Juneteenth at Ora. It's a reminder of our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels welcomed, valued, and respected.
