A new class of small-molecule drugs studied in animal models that demonstrated the hallmarks of glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was found to be efficacious in both animal models. Samsata Vision recently announced it has completed the first SING IMT (smaller-incision new-generation implantable miniature telescope) procedure in China. The first procedure was performed by Li Xiaorong, MD, PhD, member of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society, specialist committee of the Chinese Ocular Fundus Diseases Society, and Dean of the Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital and School of Optometry & Eye Institute, in early July at the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University Lecheng Hospital. Myopia has become a growing global health concern, with half of the world’s population to be impacted by the disease by 2050. In a recent study, researchers explored the association between myopia, anxiety, and mood disorders in Israeli adolescents ranging from 16 to 20 years old. The participants were studied between 2011 and 2022, using evaluations to track sociodemographic and medical histories, physical examinations, and measurements of refraction and best-corrected visual acuity. As telemedicine continues to increase in popularity, including in ophthalmology, the American Medical Association announced plans to lobby for an indefinite extension of Medicare reimbursement for telemedicine services and fight the December 31, 2024, sunset date when Medicare plans to cease reimbursement for these services. The American Academy of Ophthalmology noted on its website that from remote screenings for diabetic retinopathy to online refraction, telemedicine provides new ways for patients to access eye care – especially those who live in remote areas or may not otherwise be able to see a provider.
