We did a deep dive into which states ban fentanyl and xylazine test strips. Drug overdose deaths driven by fentanyl have risen sharply over the past decade, underscoring an ongoing—and worsening—American opioid epidemic leaving a staggering loss of life in its wake. Yet despite attempts to mitigate overdoses using fentanyl test strips, several American states still regard this proven harm-reduction strategy as an "aggravator" of the opioid epidemic, classifying the test strips as drug paraphernalia under the law. https://lnkd.in/e38YRaQm

Imagine struggling with an addiction to fentanyl, heroin, prescription painkillers, or any opioid and wanting a way out of the misery. Now imagine the inconsistent and sometimes dizzying array of messages society gives you every day about how to get that help. These mixed messages aren’t only confusing — they keep people away from the treatment that will save their life. This week, Ophelia traveled to DC to participate in the American Telemedicine Association's Hill Day. We met in offices, and hallways, to advocate for our patients and discuss topics such as remote prescribing, reimbursement policies, and the need for telemedicine regulation permanency. “Our mission, first and foremost, is to redesign addiction treatment with a focus on evidence-based principles to expand access and improve outcomes,” said Zack Gray, founder and CEO of Ophelia Now, with the PA COE designation, Ophelia has the opportunity to achieve its lofty goals. “A lot of these patients have trauma with the clinical and the medical system for lots of different reasons,” Allison Berneking MS, PA-C said. “And so, telehealth provides them a space where they can feel that vulnerability and safety and connect with us, and we can meet them there, and we can know their families, and we can see the work that they're doing, and we can have this visibility into their homes. Treating opioid addiction in the hashtag #LGBTQ+ community is important, and we need to do better. Amid all the #Pride celebrations this month, it’s essential to reflect on the disparities in health outcomes for LGBTQ+ adults — disproportionate rates of #substanceabuse, heart disease, and higher cancer risk, just to name a few. But one critical health inequity among the LGBTQ+ community that often goes overlooked: Research shows that sexual and gender minorities are at increased risk for #opioid misuse.
