About us
Open Arms Perinatal Services is an innovative nonprofit dedicated to providing strong community-based support for birthing people through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We have provided services to pregnant people and their families in the Puget Sound area since 1997. The time around the birth of a baby is a transformational time for parents and is a tremendous opportunity to support families in getting the best start in life. Through doula care and lactation peer support, we achieve better health outcomes, strengthen parent-baby bonding and increase parental self-advocacy skills. Open Arms’ unique services include home visits beginning during pregnancy, attendance at the birth of the baby, and ongoing support. We provide referrals and early parenting education up to two years after a baby is born. We also provide home visits by trained counselors to support lactation. In all of our services, we carefully match clients to care providers from the same community whenever possible, and we have the capacity to work with clients in nine different languages. Our work is foundational for maternal-infant health and early learning efforts. Open Arms serves about 500 families each year, supporting and caring for families with low income at a pivotal time when the positive impact is most profound.

Don't miss out on the recent segment from KING 5 News featuring one of our outreach doulas! Thank you to Tanya Khemet Taiwo for thinking of including us in this story about her work on perinatal mental health support.
We are proud to share a recent story from KING 5 News (NBC, Seattle) featuring Bastyr University Department of Midwifery Assistant Professor, Tanya Khemet Taiwo. The story highlights an analysis by Dr. Taiwo published in the Journal National Collaborative for Health Equity that finds a disproportionate lack of mental health screenings and care for Latina, Indigenous, and Black mothers and pregnant people. Dr. Taiwo's research is part of the Giving Voice to Mothers study by The Birthplace Lab at The University of British Columbia. Her findings emphasize the need for comprehensive perinatal mental health care, particularly for people of color. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Taiwo on her impactful work and its coverage by KING 5 News. A special thanks to Open Arms Perinatal Services for their partnership and willingness to participate in this important story. 🌟 We are thrilled to share that our incredible outreach doula, Kristin, was featured in a powerful news segment on KING 5 News! In the segment, Kristin opens up about the challenges she faced in accessing mental healthcare during her first pregnancy. Despite being an experienced doula, the struggle for mental health support took her by surprise. Her story sheds light on the critical need for better mental health resources for BIPOC birthing people. Check out the full story to learn more about Kristin's journey 👇

Every year, Open Arms recognizes someone in our community who has gone above and beyond in service of birthing people and their families with the Libin Egal Spirit Award. This award was created in memory of Libin Egal, one of our founding doulas and a dearly missed friend. With great joy, we announce Caellyn Everson as this year's Libin Egal Spirit Awardee! For over a decade, Caellyn has been a dedicated Open Arms birth doula who has served hundreds of families, dedicating over 1,000 hours to supporting them through labor. Her unwavering commitment to showing up for each family in the unique ways they need embodies the essence of all Libin Egal Spirit Awardees: compassionate, loving, and community-oriented. Congratulations, Caellyn!

We are grieving deeply over the recent passing of Penny Simkin, co-founder of DONA International and a founding board member of Open Arms. Penny was a pioneer in the field of doula work and childbirth education, working to train labor support professionals since 1968. Words fail to capture how much Penny contributed to the rise of birth support as a profession, rooted in the emotional needs of birthing people and backed by science. Her reach was, and remains, global. We join her family, friends, and community of birth workers in mourning, as well as reflecting on the tremendous influence of her life’s work. Rest in peace, Penny. 🕊
