Anthropic, NVIDIA, Intel, Google and 25 more companies were represented by the security leaders I interviewed at last month's 2nd Annual Confidential Computing Summit. If your organization wants to use AI but is struggling with data privacy and security concerns when you plan on taking experiments to production, you'll be interested in Confidential Computing. Here's my round-up of the factors those leaders told me they believe will drive this market of security-enabled AI to a state of ubiquity.

Companies that specialize in data security and AI understand the power of confidential computing. Organizations across other business sectors, such as financial services and fintech, are also primed to benefit from confidential computing: the key to adoption is helping them understand how it works and why it’s valuable. And there are a growing number of use cases demonstrating how confidential computing can help enterprises securely deploy their AI programs. This week in AI Confidential, we’re exploring real-life confidential computing use cases and providing a clear roadmap for companies to leverage the solution while deploying their AI systems. At our Confidential Computing Summit in June, experts spotlighted three key use cases that demonstrate the value of confidential computing: secure data sharing, multi-party collaboration, and IP and model protection. With these use cases as an anchor, our industry has a prime opportunity to generate more high-level awareness around how exactly the technology helps enterprises manage their user data securely. We can also do this by prioritizing communication and transparency: showing how our technology can help different industries and continuing to demonstrate the value of product solutions such as our Confidential AI Platform. Check out this week’s newsletter for a deep dive into the roadblocks and opportunities of accelerating AI adoption with confidential computing. #CyberSecurity #ConfidentialComputing #DataProtection https://lnkd.in/eB7-dni4

🌊 The Next Big Wave in AI: Leveraging Proprietary Business Data And knowledge workers are creating massive amounts of it: - Zoom generates 3T+ meeting minutes/year (For context: YouTube has ~150M hours of total content). - Slack delivers 1B+ messages/week. - Ironclad processes more than 1B docs/year. And there's massive economic potential here too: - There's a huge difference in ARPI for B2B apps vs. top consumer apps (more info below) - Even "consumer-oriented" business apps such as Notion, earn much more. What's next: - We'll see startups working to unlock the hidden value in business data. - Companies will develop AI models tailored to their proprietary data. - Both will be poised for exponential value creation. Ion, a co-founder of Databricks and a professor at UC Berkeley, has made significant contributions to the field of big data and distributed systems, including pioneering projects like Apache Spark and Apache Ray. Aaron, with over two decades of experience in the tech industry, is known for his strategic vision and success in driving hyper-growth, having previously held leadership roles at ServiceNow and founded MindTouch. Together, their impressive achievements and deep expertise lend incredible credibility to their vision for Opaque and how our product is solving the most significant challenge in AI today: data privacy and sovereignty.

Ion Stoica: A Visionary Thinker on How Opaque is Solving the Greatest Challenge in AI - Data Privacy and Sovereignty I'm excited to share an insightful discussion with Ion Stoica, one of the most respected and visionary thinkers in the AI space. Ion, a co-founder of Databricks and a professor at UC Berkeley, has made significant contributions to the field of big data and distributed systems, including pioneering projects like Apache Spark and Apache Ray. His impressive achievements and deep expertise lend incredible credibility to his vision for Opaque and how our product solves the most significant AI challenge today: data privacy and sovereignty. During the conversation, Ion delved into the foundational technologies and companies that set the stage for Opaque's creation. He highlighted the importance of data value and the challenges of maintaining privacy and security in the face of increasing data usage. Drawing on his experiences with groundbreaking projects like Apache Spark and Databricks, Ion emphasized the need for innovative solutions to bridge the gap between data utility and confidentiality. Opaque was founded by pioneers from UC Berkeley’s RISELab, including Professor Ion Stoica, Professor Raluca Ada Popa, and Dr. Rishabh Poddar. The team developed the MC2 platform, enabling secure multiparty collaboration on encrypted data. This technology is at the core of Opaque’s platform, which allows organizations to run general-purpose AI workloads on encrypted data without compromising privacy or performance. In the video, Ion discusses the proliferation of AI and the growing tension between data privacy and the need for expansive data analysis. He explains how Opaque's platform addresses these challenges, providing a solution that ensures data security while enabling valuable insights. Don’t miss this conversation highlighting the visionary thinking behind Opaque and our mission to make AI secure, sovereign, and private. Watch the full discussion here: https://lnkd.in/guRn2dyP My favorite part begins at ~24 mins when I ask Ion about the new reality we operate in where AI has been weaponized and how this weaponization will affect every enterprise deploying AI. If you can't watch all the way through, jump to this section. #AI #DataPrivacy #AIInnovation #DataSovereignty

In October 2023, Truist Bank, one of the top 10 commercial banks in the United States, experienced a significant data breach that was recently confirmed by the bank[1][3]. The breach came to light when a cybercriminal known as "Sp1d3r" offered stolen data from Truist Bank for sale on a dark web forum in June 2024[1][3]. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Truist Bank, accusing the bank of negligence in protecting customer data[7]. "Defendant could have prevented this Data Breach by, among other things, properly encrypting or otherwise protecting their equipment and computer files containing PII (personally identifying information)."[7] We have an easy button at Opaque Systems for preventing this. 🤷♂️ Scope: The hacker claims to have data on approximately 65,000 employees, which they are offering for sale at $1 million[3][4]. Compromised information: The stolen data allegedly includes employee records, bank transactions (including customer names, account numbers, and balances), and source code for the bank's Interactive Voice Response (IVR) funds transfer system[1][4]. Bank's response: Truist Bank stated that the incident was "quickly contained" and that they conducted a thorough investigation with external security consultants[3][4]. Notification: The bank initially notified a small number of clients in the fall of 2023 and has recently begun notifying additional clients based on new information from the ongoing investigation[4]. The articles provided in citations are terrific reads.

In the last decade, AI compute has been skyrocketing, doubling approximately every 3.5 months since 2012—far surpassing Moore's Law. OpenAI research highlights a staggering 300,000x increase in compute power for the largest AI training runs from 2012 to 2022. This exponential growth has driven breakthroughs in large language models and image generation. Amid these advancements, the U.S. government is considering measures to regulate the spread of AI technologies, focusing on essential hardware and protecting sensitive data. Indeed, over 200 bills in the US Congress relate to AI. The need for stringent data controls becomes increasingly critical as AI becomes more pervasive in enterprise settings. What percentage of enterprise AI workloads include sensitive customer or confidential proprietary data? Based on industry estimates, approximately 40-60% of AI workloads involve sensitive data. This estimate considers the widespread use of AI in sensitive applications across finance, healthcare, high-tech, and government sectors, where personal, financial, and proprietary information is processed. The high stakes of data privacy in these areas, combined with increasing regulatory pressures, further validate this estimate. This underscores the importance of our work at Opaque. We ensure that sensitive data remains private and secure, enabling enterprises to harness AI's full potential without compromising data sovereignty.
